This week the Game of the Week pick will focus on Sunday night baseball on ESPN. ESPN will feature the subway series as the New York Yankees take on the New York Mets. This is a rematch of the series when the Yankees blasted Mets ace Johan Santana in a 15-0 blowout win. The Yankees took two out of three in that series but this series has a change of venue as the Yankees will be playing in Citi Field.
The Yankees send troubled starter Chien-Ming Wang to the hill for the Sunday finale of the series. Wang started the season on a bad note and expectations of another 19 win season were crushed early. It got so bad that Yankee skipper Joe Giradi gave him an ultimatum to pitch well or lose his role as a starter. Since that demand he has put together two very good games against the Nationals and the Braves and looks to be regaining some of the form he had last year. His sinker is becoming effective again and he is not allowing the big inning.
The Mets counter with Livan Hernandez on Sunday night. Hernandez has been a delightful surprise for the Mets and has performed valiantly this year. Hernandez has filled in and become a valuable starter after injuries have ripped through the rotation. Hernandez comes into this game after a great pitching performance against the Cardinals. His assignment will not get any easier this week against the Yankees.
The subway series has always been entertaining and the Mets hold an 8-7 edge. The Mets playing at home should certainly help them in this game, as of this writing they are 22-14 this year. The lineup has been decimated by injuries but the replacements have been playing with energy and scoring runs. The Yankees bats have started to warm up in the last series against Atlanta otherwise they have been very cold. Wang will have troubles in this game and expect him to be pulled early as the Yankees try to fill voids to play with the NL rule book. Wang has never been the same after injuring his foot. The loss of the DH will be counterproductive for the Yankees lineup. Livan Hernandez knows how to pitch in big games against opponents on a big stage. The Mets should be listed as dogs in this game, take the home town Mets to get the win on Sunday night on ESPN!
Game of the Week Pick: New York Mets
The sports world always gives me plenty of things to rant about but this week they have gone the extra mile. This week I rant about Donte Stallworth and the commissioner, Plaxico Burress, and while Twitter is changing the sports world.
It was announced today that NFL Commissioner Roger Godell will do what the justice system did not, punish Donte Stallworth. The NFL suspended the Cleveland Brown wide receiver indefinitely and he will not be paid during the suspension. Stallworth pleaded guilty this month to a DUI manslaughter charge for striking Mario Reyes on March 14 in Florida. He has already started his 30 day jails sentence for the crime, and although there was a list of other punishments, the sentence was a joke. I know this NFL suspension will be appealed and maybe even over turned this year but at least the commissioner is taking this seriously, something the courts forgot to do.
It looks like the commissioner will have a busy week ahead of him as next he has to decide on the fate of Ex-New York Giants wide receiver, Plaxico Burress. There is a good chance he will have to let him play since the courts have not fond him guilty of anything yet and the Giants looked the other way on this one. The question is do you want him on your team? The rumors are flying that the Bears want him and that Jay Cutler sent him a text telling him to sign with the Bears. Cutler denies that he texted Plaxico, but it might be an interesting fit. The problem is this would be at best a one year rental and the guy is a wreck in the locker room and a horrible teammate. Tim Hasslebeck played with Plaxico and he had this to say about the troubled wide receiver. “I played with the guy. I was in the locker room with him for two years. He’s a disaster as a teammate. He’s a disaster as a guy that you have to coach.” Why take a chance on a guy like this? I say let him sit out a year but you know that won’t happen.
Lastly it’s hard to go throughout a day without hearing abut Twitter in the sports world. This week was no exception as Kevin Love scooped the media and his front office by announcing that head coach Kevin McHale was not coming back to the Timber wolves next year. I know it’s the new thing to do and even I have a Twitter account (@MRegaw) but the sports world better adjust. Kevin Love meant no harm and was sad to see him go but he made his management look bad. Kevin McHale did plenty for this franchise and deserved better than this as well. My suggestion to T’Wolves owner Glen Taylor is to open a Twitter account and change with the times!

Toronto Blue Jays at Philadelphia Phillies
Wednesday, 7:05 pm Eastern – ESPN
SBG Global Opening Line: Phillies - 130 , Total 10 Over – 120
The Toronto Blue Jays are one team that could do without Interleague play. Before last night’s game the Blue Jays were 0-6 in Interleague play this season. “It’s hard to explain. Some teams beat up on you — some teams don’t,” manager Cito Gaston said. Last season the Blue Jays were 8-9 in Interleague play. Usually American League teams beat up on National League teams but that is not the case with Toronto. Only Baltimore, Kansas City and Tampa Bay have worse all-time records in Interleague play than Toronto does.
SBG Global reports that early MLB Betting has the public taking Blue Jays on the Road.
“National League people say, ‘Oh, we’re the one who’s getting screwed,’” Gaston said. “To me, you’re just getting a hitter, putting him in there and letting him hit. It’s nothing else happening. You’re getting a guy off the bench to get some at-bats. I’m pretty sure that, Philly, when they go somewhere, they will let [Matt] Stairs hit so he can get some at-bats. So, I don’t see how it can be a disadvantage for them. It’s more of a disadvantage for us. This next road trip, Philly and going into Washington, I lose my [designated hitter]. I get my pitchers in danger of getting hurt. People talk about bunting, I’m just talking about getting out of the way of the ball.”
Jamie Moyer gets the start for the Phillies on Wednesday. He allowed only eight hits and three runs and struck out three in six innings last Thursday against the Mets. He is 1-2 with a 3.77 ERA in his last five starts.
Here are the MLB Betting stats for Wednesday’s game. The Blue Jays are 20-41 in their last 61 Interleague games as an underdog. The Blue Jays are 1-4 in their last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Blue Jays are 2-10 in their last 12 road games.
The Phillies are 7-2 in their last 9 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Phillies are 7-3 in Moyer’s last 10 home starts.
Bookmaker Current Line: Phillies - 130 , Total 10 Flat
The Over is 4-0 in the Blue Jays last 4 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Under is 8-2-1 in the Phillies last 11 games as a home favorite. The Under is 5-0 in Moyer’s last 5 starts overall.
Pick: Over 10 runs
