August 28th, 2009

It was announced this morning that the Denver Broncos have suspended troubled wide receiver Brandon Marshall for the rest of the preseason. This is just the latest problem with the wide receiver since he dragged himself into camp. This latest suspension was based on detrimental conduct. It’s been much more than that.

First he came kicking and screaming into camp after the Jay Cutler deal and demanded a trade or a new contract. Then he missed a preseason game to go to court, and then he was taken out of a preseason game because he did not know the play book. This would be different if Marshall was a great player on the field and a good teammate off the field. He may be great on the field but he is far from great off of it. He has had numerous brushes with the law for “allegedly” beating his girlfriend and problems with anger management. In short this guy has been a nightmare.

For rookie head coach Josh McDaniels this has been a tough gig from the start. He botched the trade for Matt Cassell and alienated perhaps the best offensive player on the team. He then traded the QB just to have the rest of his team boycott the moves. Just when he is starting to get things under control along comes Brandon Marshall. With news crews watching practice he refused to run with team, batted balls down he was supposed to be catching and was a distraction while showing disregard for the coaching staff. McDaniels finally had enough and had to suspend Marshall. If they agree to trade him they open the door for other players to jump ship and his trade value drops as other teams will see him as a distraction and trouble maker to the team. There is no way on earth you can offer him a contract extension with the mindset he is in. The best thing to do was remove the cancer that he has become and get him away from the team.

What are Brandon Marshall and his agent thinking? This lowers his trade value and if he keeps it up he will not play in the regular season and could cost him money. As much as he may hate it Marshall has to get on the same page have a great season and then get out of town. In the meantime he is a cancer on this team and the Broncos are doing the right thing here in my mind.

NFL Betting Preview
Denver Broncos (8-7) at San Diego Chargers (7-8)
Sunday, 8:15 pm Eastern – NBC

SBG Global Opening Line: Chargers -  8.5 ,  Total  50

The AFC West title will be on the line Sunday night as the San Diego Chargers host the Denver Broncos on NBC.  The Broncos have collapsed in recent weeks allowing the Chargers back in the race and now it is San Diego that looks like a playoff team rather than Denver.  The Broncos have been in first place in the division all season but a loss to the Chargers and it all means nothing.  If the Broncos lose they would become the first team since division play began to blow a three-game lead with three weeks remaining.

“Unfortunately we’re not going to be able to go up there and take it easy,” Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall said. “We’re going to have to go up there in their back yard and prove to them that we’re better than them. They’re a good team, they’re playing better now, and they’ve got all the momentum.”

SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Chargers at Home.

The Chargers are red-hot having won three straight games including last week’s 41-24 win at Tampa Bay. “We were 4-8. We could have shut it down,” said San Diego tight end Antonio Gates, “Honestly, you know, we could have said, ‘You know what, Denver ain’t going to lose three in a row.’ We could have taken that mind-set. But it was more about the San Diego Chargers and what we were trying to accomplish. Eventually that gave us a chance to sit here and play.” The Chargers have won big in the last two home games against Denver by a combined score of 71-23.

Earlier this season in Denver the Chargers lost to the Broncos because of a bad referee’s call but now that seems a distant memory as San Diego can get their revenge and win the division on Sunday.  It could be an offensive shootout considering Denver has Jay Cutler throwing the ball all over the field while San Diego’s Phillip Rivers has been even better.  Cutler broke Jake Plummer’s single-season franchise record with 4,210 yards in last week’s loss to the Bills.  Cutler is headed to the Pro Bowl while Rivers is not.  Rivers though has the better numbers as he leads the NFL in touchdowns and passer rating.

Here are the NFL betting stats for Sunday’s game. The Broncos are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 road games. The Broncos are 3-13-1 ATS in their last 17 vs. AFC West. The Broncos are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in December.

The Broncos are 0-4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between the two teams.

The Chargers are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games in December. The Chargers are 20-7-4 ATS in their last 31 vs. the AFC West. The Chargers are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 home games.

SBG Global Current Line: Chargers -  8.5 ,  Total  50.5

The Over is 9-3 in the Broncos last 12 vs. the AFC West. The Over is 9-4-1 in the Broncos last 14 road games. The Under is 4-0-1 in the Chargers last 5 home games. The Over is 4-1-1 in the Chargers last 6 vs. the AFC West. The Under is 7-3-1 in the Chargers last 11 games overall. The Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between the two teams.

NFL Betting Preview
Denver Broncos (4-4) at Cleveland Browns (3-5)
Thursday, 8:15 pm Eastern – NFL Network

SBG Global Opening Line: Browns  -  3  ,  Total  46.5

The time has come in Cleveland for quarterback Brady Quinn.  After playing behind Derek Anderson last season and for the first eight games this season, Quinn will get the start on Thursday as the Browns host the Denver Broncos.  Anderson was a Pro-Bowler last season but has looked lost most of the time this year.  He was 17 of 33 on Sunday for 219 yards against the Ravens but threw an interception to Terrell Suggs that was run in for a touchdown that clinched the game for Baltimore.  “It’s deflating when they run the ball in for a touchdown,” head coach Romeo Crennel said, “It’s deflating when they throw the ball over your head. It’s deflating when you don’t make a catch in the open. It’s deflating when you lose a game.” Thursday’s game is the first of the regular season for the NFL Network so get used to Thursday night action the rest of the season. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Broncos on the Road.

Cleveland is just 27th in the NFL in offense and head coach Crennel decided it was time for Quinn.  It is a short week for Quinn but he does get to face a Denver defense that is terrible.  The Broncos are 29th in the league and haven’t stopped anyone all season.  It won’t get any better for the Broncos on defense considering they lost weak-side linebacker D.J. Williams to injury against Miami.  He was the leading tackler for Denver this season.

Denver is already without Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, who’s out at least a month, and his brother, Boss, who’s out for the season.  They could also be without safety Marlon McCree who was hurt this past Sunday.  The injuries carry over to the offense as running backs Andre Hall (left hand) and Michael Pittman (neck) were placed on IR this week.

SBG Global Current Line: Browns  -  3  ,  Total  46

The Broncos have won all three meetings since Cleveland got a team again including the only meeting in Cleveland in 2006. Denver is 2-1 against the spread in those matchups.  Their one pointspread loss was at Denver. Two of those games went over the total. The only game in Cleveland in 2006 did go under as the Broncos won 17-7. Here are more NFL betting stats for Thursday’s game.  The Browns are over 70% as a home favorite the past three years.  The Broncos have gone over the total on the road more than 60% of the time the past three years.

NFL Betting Preview
Denver Broncos (4-2) at New England Patriots (3-2)
Monday, 8:35 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: Patriots  -  3   ,  Total  46

It is quite clear now that the New England Patriots are not the same team they were a year ago.  With Tom Brady out for the season due to injury the Patriots have had to turn to Matt Cassel at quarterback and although he has had his moments, he is not ready to start in the NFL.  The Patriots have scored more than 20 points only once this season.  The defense is also suffering, giving up 89 points in their last three games. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Broncos on the Road.

The Patriots may be favored on Monday but history is not on their side. They have struggled against Denver even when they had good teams.  The Patriots lost at home in 2006 to the Broncos and that was with a healthy Tom Brady.  The Broncos have won 16 of the last 19 meetings between the two teams.

If New England can’t get their offense going this week then they may never get it going.  The Broncos have allowed 400 or more total yards three times this season.  The potent Denver offense is also struggling a bit.  They have scored less than 20 points in each of their last three games.

Here are the NFL betting stats for Monday’s game.  The Broncos are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games in Week 7. The Broncos are 7-22-1 ATS in their last 30 games overall. The Broncos are 3-11 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Broncos are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. the AFC. The Broncos are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in October. The Broncos are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Broncos are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings in New England.

The Patriots are 18-5-1 ATS in their last 24 games in October. The Patriots are 1-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Patriots are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The Patriots are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 vs. the AFC. The Patriots are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 home games.

SBG Global Current Line: Patriots  -  3   ,  Total  48.5

The Over is 12-3 in the Broncos last 15 vs. the AFC. The Over is 7-2 in the Broncos last 9 road games. The Over is 20-6-1 in the Broncos last 27 games overall. The Under is 5-2 in the Broncos last 7 Monday games. The Under is 7-1-1 in the Patriots last 9 vs. the AFC. The Under is 6-1-1 in the Patriots last 8 home games. The Over is 5-1 in the Patriots last 6 games in October.

The Under is 8-3-1 in the Patriots last 12 games overall. The Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in New England between the two teams.

NFL Betting Preview
Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) at Denver Broncos (4-1)
Sunday, 4:05 pm Eastern – CBS

SBG Global Opening Line: Broncos  -  3.5   ,  Total  48.5

The Denver Broncos will go for their seventh straight home win dating back to last season as they host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.  The Jaguars and Broncos have met six times in history with each team winning three times, although the Jaguars have won the last three meetings.  Last year the Jaguars won 23-14 against Denver and outrushed the Broncos 186-47 in the game.  Jacksonville will look to run the ball again on Sunday as Denver has the 25th ranked run defense in the NFL.  This season the Jaguars have struggled to run the ball though, after ranking 2nd in the NFL a year ago. “I think it’s more than anything lack of attempts,” head coach Jack Del Rio said.  The Jaguars are 19th in the NFL in rushing this season. The Jaguars may also look to pass against a Broncos defense that ranks 30th in the league in pass defense. “We have to try to take advantage of it because offensively you can see that they can score some points. We have to match that,” quarterback David Garrard said. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Broncos at Home.

Here are the NFL betting stats for Sunday’s game. The Jaguars are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Jaguars are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Jaguars are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games on grass. The underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between the two teams.

The Broncos are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 games on grass. The Broncos are 5-14-1 ATS in their last 20 vs. the AFC. The Broncos are 7-21-1 ATS in their last 29 games overall. The Broncos are 4-12-1 ATS in their last 17 home games. The Broncos are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in October.

SBG Global Current Line: Broncos  -  3   ,  Total  48

The Over is 8-1-1 in the Jaguars last 10 road games. The Over is 10-2-1 in the Jaguars last 13 games on grass. The Over is 16-5-2 in the Jaguars last 23 vs. AFC. The Under is 9-3 in the Jaguars last 12 games in Week 6. The Over is 20-7-2 in the Jaguars last 29 games overall

NFL Betting Preview
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1) at Denver Broncos (3-1)
Sunday, 4:05 pm Eastern – FOX

SBG Global Opening Line: Broncos  -  3   ,  Total  48

One of the more entertaining games on Sunday could be in Denver as the high scoring Broncos host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  The Broncos offense has bailed them out in most games but it couldn’t do enough last week in the loss to Kansas City.  The Broncos rank 30th in the league in yards allowed and 31st in points allowed. “We’ve got to find a way to be more consistent,” cornerback Dre’ Bly said. “Defensively, we haven’t had the year we want to have.”  The Broncos still could be unbeaten though if their offense had not turned the ball over four times last week and settled for field goals. “Any offense that does that to a defense, there’s no chance,” said Denver head coach Mike Shanahan, “People will point to the defense, but that’s so far from the truth. We’ve got to play better. We’ve got some work to do. But it was not quite as bad as it looked in those final stats.” SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Broncos at Home.

The Bucs have won three straight and are tied for first place in the NFC South with Carolina.  The Bucs have been led by linebacker Derrick Brooks and a defense that makes plays. “Unbelievable,” coach Jon Gruden said. “We know he’s been nursing and working through an injury. What he played like today was the Derrick Brooks that everybody recognizes. He made plays sideline to sideline. There’s a lot of strength left in Derrick Brooks and we need him in the final 12 weeks.”

Tampa head coach Jon Gruden has not had much success against Denver.  He is 1-8 in his head coaching career against the Broncos.  Here are more NFL betting stats for Sunday’s game.  The Buccaneers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in October.

The Broncos are 7-17-1 ATS in their last 25 games on grass. The Broncos are 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 home games. The Broncos are 7-20-1 ATS in their last 28 games overall. The Broncos are 3-10 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

SBG Global Current Line: Broncos  -  3   ,  Total  47.5

The Over is 6-0 in the Buccaneers last 6 road games. The Over is 8-2 in the Buccaneers last 10 games overall. The Over is 13-3-1 in the Broncos last 17 home games. The Over is 21-5-1 in the Broncos last 27 games overall. The Over is 5-2-1 in the Broncos last 8 games in Week 5.

New Orleans Saints at Denver Broncos
Sunday, 4:05 pm Eastern – FOX

SBG Global Opening Line: Broncos  -  5.5   ,  Total  51

The highest scoring game in the NFL this week could be in Denver as the Broncos host the New Orleans Saints.  The Broncos outscored the San Diego Chargers last week while the Saints lost 29-24 to Washington.  The Broncos are trying to start the season at 3-0 for the first time in five years.  Denver leads the NFL in total offense at 463.5 yards per game.  Quarterback Jay Cutler leads the league with 650 passing yards and is tied for first with six TDs.  Wide receiver Brandon Marshall caught a team-record 18 passes for 166 yards and a TD last week. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Broncos at Home.

The Saints usually can score points as well, but didn’t do anything late against Washington last week and lost the game. “I thought we were fortunate to be up by nine going into the fourth quarter,” said Saints coach Sean Payton, “That teased us a little bit. But when it came time in the fourth quarter with some critical plays – offensively trying to make a yard, trying to convert a third-and-5, or defensively trying to keep the ball in front of us – they made those plays.”  Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 216 yards and a touchdown but got very little help from his running backs.

The Saints and Broncos have not met since 2004.  The Broncos won that game 34-13.  Here are more NFL betting stats for Sunday’s game.  The Saints are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Saints are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games in Week 3.

The Broncos are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 home games. The Broncos are 7-15-1 ATS in their last 23 games on grass. The Broncos are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 games overall. The Broncos are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games in September.

SBG Global Current Line: Broncos -  5   ,  Total  51

The Over is 7-0 in the Saints last 7 games overall. The Over is 6-2 in the Saints last 8 road games. The Over is 5-0 in the Broncos last 5 games in September. The Over is 12-1-1 in the Broncos last 14 home games. The Under is 4-1 in the Broncos last 5 games in Week 3. The Over is 21-6-1 in the Broncos last 28 games overall. San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos
Sunday, 4:15 pm Eastern – CBS

SBG Global Opening Line: Chargers  -  2   ,  Total  45.5

Emotions could be running high on Sunday afternoon as AFC West rivals meet in Denver as the Broncos host the Chargers. The last time they played, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was seen yelling at Denver quarterback Jay Cutler. You can bet none of the Broncos players have forgotten what happened last season.  Rivers sure doesn’t want to talk about it. “I’m not going to get into it through you guys, through the media, all week long,” said Rivers, “I’m just not going to do it. I’m going to talk football about Denver and see what kind of team they are as I get to prepare for them and go play the game. Whatever happened to me is gone.” SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Broncos   at Home.

Denver lost both games to San Diego last season but the Broncos look like a much better team this year. They also will not have to deal with San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman who is out for the year.  Merriman didn’t do much last week in the loss to Carolina and felt surgery was the best option for his injured knee.

Denver routed Oakland last week, winning 41-14 and looked very impressive with quarterback Jay Cutler throwing for 299 yards and two touchdowns.  Receiver Eddie Royal had a great game, catching nine balls for 146 yards and a TD.  Brandon Marshall was out last week due to suspension but he returns this week. “This just opens up a lot of possibilities for us,” Cutler said. “We anticipated B-Marsh getting a lot of double coverage up top, and now you can’t, because Eddie is on the other side. I’ve had a good feel for Eddie, and I’ve been throwing it his way more and more.”  The Chargers have won the last two meetings between the two teams in Denver.

Here is a look at the NFL betting stats for Sunday’s game. The Chargers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Chargers are 19-7-3 ATS in their last 29 vs. the AFC West. The Chargers are 44-21-2 ATS in their last 67 games overall. The Chargers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in September. The Chargers are 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between the two teams.

SBG Global Current Line: Chargers  -  PK   ,  Total  45

The Broncos have won their last eight home openers. The Broncos are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games. The Broncos are 7-18 ATS in their last 25 games overall. The Broncos are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 vs. the AFC West.

The Broncos are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in September.

The Over is 4-0 in the Chargers last 4 games in September. The Over is 11-3-2 in the Chargers last 16 road games. The Under is 14-6 in the Chargers last 20 vs. the AFC West.

The Over is 4-0 in the Broncos last 4 games in September. The Over is 11-1-1 in the Broncos last 13 home games. The Over is 7-1 in the Broncos last 8 vs. the AFC West. The Over is 20-6-1 in the Broncos last 27 games overall.

Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders
Monday, 10:15 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: Broncos  -  1   ,  Total  41.5

The Oakland Raiders host the Denver Broncos in the late game on ESPN’s opening Monday Night Football doubleheader as rookie Darren McFadden makes his NFL regular season debut.  The Raiders’ running back is expected to make an immediate impact this season. He will be facing a Denver defense that was terrible against the run last season, allowing 145.9 yards per game.  In the two teams final meeting last season Raiders’ running back

Justin Fargas had 146 yards. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Broncos on the Road.

Both teams will be looking for improved play out of their quarterbacks this season.  Denver’s Jay Cutler was up and down last season, throwing for 20 touchdowns but also throwing 14 interceptions.  He was diagnosed with Diabetes in the off-season and is now receiving insulin that should help his overall energy level.  Cutler will be missing his favorite receiver in Monday’s game as Brandon Marshall is out due to a one-game suspension.

The Raiders are also hoping for better quarterback play this season.  JaMarcus Russell is the full-time starter this season and he will look to put up solid numbers this season. “You can never be Superman when you have other teammates,” Russell said. “So just go out there and do the basics and do what you do each and every day.” The Raiders signed former Bronco wide receivers Javon Walker and Ashley Lelie in the off-season to give Russell some deep threats.

SBG Global Current Line: Broncos  -  3   ,  Total  41

Here are the NFL betting stats for Monday’s game.  Denver head coach Mike Shanahan is 20-6 against the Raiders.  The Broncos are 6-15 ATS in their last 21 games on grass. The Broncos are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 games overall. The Broncos are 4-13 ATS in their last 17 vs. the AFC. The Broncos are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 vs. the AFC West. The Broncos are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games. The Broncos are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in September.

The Raiders are 26-54-1 ATS in their last 81 games overall. The Raiders are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games in September. The Raiders are 8-22 ATS in their last 30 home games. The Raiders are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 Monday games. The Raiders are 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between the two teams. The Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

The Over is 6-1 in the Broncos last 7 vs. the AFC West. The Under is 5-1 in the Broncos last 6 Monday games. The Over is 9-2 in the Broncos last 11 vs. the AFC. The Over is 19-7-1 in the Broncos last 27 games overall. The Over is 5-2 in the Broncos last 7 road games.

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Denver Broncos at Arizona Cardinals
Friday, 10:00 pm Eastern

SBG Global Opening Line: Cardinals  -  3  ,  Total  38

Normally the final game of the preseason is virtually meaningless but that may not be the case in Arizona on Friday night as the Cardinals host the Denver Broncos.  It was thought that Kurt Warner had won the starting quarterback job for Arizona but head coach Ken Whisenhunt was unhappy news was released by the media and supposedly Matt Leinart is still in the running.  It may not matter though if Leinart plays as bad as he did a week ago when he was 4-12 for just 24 yards against the Raiders, throwing three interceptions. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Cardinals at Home.

Kurt Warner will start the game against Denver but Whisenhunt is still waiting to name the regular season starter.  “We all want to know,” Warner said, “For Matt and myself, it’d be nice knowing what the situation would be and be able to move forward with it. The way I look at it more than anything, the sooner it can happen, the sooner we can get past the (interviews and media coverage) that goes with it, and you can prepare for the game.”  Warner has not taken nearly as many snaps as Leinart in the preseason but has played far better.  “Hopefully we’ll get in enough snaps with the first (offensive) line that both can play,” Whisenhunt said. “I just wanted to make sure Kurt gets his timing with the ones for this game, much like we did in Kansas City.” Most of the starters for both teams are not expected to play a great deal on Friday so how much can be determined with backups playing alongside Warner and Leinart is up for debate.

SBG Global Current Line: Cardinals  -  3  ,  Total  38

Denver has looked good this preseason, especially quarterback Jay Cutler.

He is 30 for 43 for 352 yards, with three touchdowns, and no interceptions this preseason.  He probably won’t play long on Friday which means backups Patrick Ramsey and Darrell Hackney will see the bulk of the action. Starting wide receiver Brandon Marshall may see some action though since he will miss the first part of the regular season due to suspension.

NFL betting stats show that Denver has a 12-5 edge in the all-time preseason series with Arizona, including a 21-3 home win last year in the preseason.  The Broncos have been great in preseason finales in recent seasons, winning eight of their last nine. Denver is 3-1 in its last four preseason games against the Cardinals including three straight.
