Another week of the NBA betting season has come and gone, and Bang the Book takes a look at Who’s Hot & Who’s Not, brought to you by Sportsbook.com! ATS Power Poll 1: Milwaukee Bucks (38-21 ATS): The Bucks are arguably the hottest team in the NBA right now. Even though their six-game winning streak SU was stopped by the Hawks in overtime in Atlanta on Sunday, their successful ATS run moved to seven games with ease. Not only is Milwaukee back in the playoff picture, but it also shot up to the top spot in the NBA betting power poll as well after being off the radar for the majority of the season. 2: Utah Jazz (36-20-3 ATS): Utah may have leveled off quite a bit in recent weeks, alternating ATS wins and losses in its L/5, but it did post one of the more impressive wins of the week by crushing Houston 133-110 at home on Saturday. It’s not often that you see a team shoot 68% from the floor for an entire game. There’s more from this team coming later… 3: Oklahoma City Thunder (35-23 ATS): A four-game ATS slide finally stopped on Friday with a big win over Minnesota. A 119-99 victory over the Raptors two nights later pushed the streak to two games. F Kevin Durant’s streak of 25+ point performances might’ve stopped against San Antonio, but his Thunder are still a force to be reckoned with in the Western Conference. ATS Power Outage 1: Boston Celtics (21-35-1 ATS): Congrats, Boston. You successfully unseated the Nets for the worst ATS record in the NBA. Four straight losses ATS dropped the team to just 6-20-1 ATS in 27 games played at Boston Garden this season. The only good bits of news for this team are that the rest of the Atlantic Division is still playing terrible basketball as well, and F Paul Pierce is set to return to the lineup. 2: New Jersey Nets (22-36-1 ATS): The Nets showed a bit of a pulse on Saturday night when they beat the Celtics at Boston Garden. However, Jersey is still just a dismal 6-53 and is still on a reasonable clip to beat or match the 1972 Philadelphia 76ers NBA record for nine wins in a season. 3: Dallas Mavericks (25-34-1 ATS): If the Mavs keep playing like this, they’ll be off of this list in one more week’s time. This is a squad that looks dominant right now, winning seven straight and going 4-2-1 ATS in those seven. Dallas’ new look is going to make it a real contender in the Western Conference this year. The Good The Bad The Ugly
G Jason Kidd, Dallas Mavericks: Not bad when you can log a triple-double and make one of the headiest plays of the entire season on the same night. Kidd did just that by recording 19 points, 17 assists, and 16 boards against the Hawks, but perhaps his most important play came when he intentionally bumped into Atlanta HC Mike Goodson when he was on the court directing his defense. That’s interfering with the course of play, which warrants a technical foul. The Mavs tied the game and forced overtime, which they went on to win by eight points.
The Defense of the Houston Rockets: How many more weeks will the Rockets show up on the wrong side of this list before HC Rick Adelman finds himself in some serious hot water? Houston allowed the Jazz to score 133 points and shoot 68% from the floor in that romp previously mentioned. What made matters worse? Utah would’ve scored a heck of a lot more points if it had shot better than 57.7% from the free throw line…
Boston Celtics: The Nets? Really, Boston? How on earth you can find a way to lose to arguably the worst team in NBA history in front of your hometown faithful is mind-boggling. G Ray Allen shot just 3/11 from the field, but even though the C’s shot 50% from the field and outrebounded the Nets by six, a whopping 18 turnovers proved to be their undoing.

The NBA trade deadline shook things up in the basketball betting world quite a bit. Check out Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in the world of the NBA at Bang the Book, brought to you by Sportsbook.com! ATS Power Poll 1: Utah Jazz (34-18-3 ATS): The All-Star Break didn’t slow down the Jazz at all from the looks of it. Utah opened up the second half with four road games and took four victories both SU and ATS. That bumped its road record to 16-9-1 ATS on the season, and even though it’s not as strong as an 18-9-2 mark in Salt Lake City, the Jazz are proving that they are a force to be reckoned with on a nightly basis and are a can’t miss team for your NBA picks. 2: Oklahoma City Thunder (33-21 ATS): Ho hum. Three more 25+ point games for F Kevin Durant. Even though the Texas product is doing nothing but boosting his case to be the league’s MVP and the Thunder continue to find ways to win games (they’re at nine in a row right now), they ran into problems covering numbers at New York and Minnesota this week. Oklahoma City’s bettors hope that that ends this week with a tough stretch of games against Phoenix and San Antonio. 3: Atlanta Hawks (33-21 ATS): Atlanta’s quest to run down the Magic for the lead in the Southeast Division took a turn for the worse this week with a pair of road losses. The good news for the Hawks is that they’re coming home for three straight soon, where they are 18-9 ATS on the season. The bad news is that they have to stop in Utah first. ATS Power Outage 1: New Jersey Nets (21-34-1 ATS): The Nets got their monthly victory last week when they took it to Charlotte as hefty underdogs, but they followed that up by getting progressively worse over the course of the week. Losses to Miami, Toronto, and Memphis at home dropped Jersey to just 10-17 ATS at home on the year. 2: Boston Celtics (21-32-1 ATS): Boston is still a level .500 team on the road this year against the NBA betting lines, but taking three out of four SU on this West Coast swing really had to help the Celtics’ cause. These next three home games are crucial. Trips to New York and New Jersey will be inexcusable, but that showdown in the middle with Cleveland may prove to this team one way or the other if it can really ball with the big boys in the East. 3: Dallas Mavericks (23-33 ATS): Once the Mavs start to gel a little bit more, they’ll be in fine shape. But for now, they’re still not consistent enough to back on a regular basis. That 95-85 win in Orlando was awfully impressive though, and it’s probably a sign of what the rest of the teams in the Western Conference can expect to see down the line from the boys from “Big D.” The Good The Bad The Ugly
Washington Wizards: That’s right. We said it. The Wizards are “The Good” this week! Their front office doesn’t get a thumbs up for dealing away their entire team (F Antawn Jamison to Cleveland and F Caron Butler to Dallas), but the pieces to the puzzle that have come together in our nation’s capitol are fighting hard to prove that they belong at this level. Since February 5th, Washington is a solid 3-2 SU and 5-0 ATS. F Andray Blatche has been on fire, scoring an average of 25.0 PPG in his L/3.
The New-Look Houston Rockets: HC Rick Adelman had better hope that these L/2 games are nothing more than a bump in the road for his Rockets, or he’ll be on the unemployment line here really soon. After acquiring both G Kevin Martin and F Jared Jeffries in a deal that really didn’t cost much of anything for the time being, Houston has laid two major eggs, getting dumped by eight at New Orleans and by ten at home to Indiana. The next four teams on the slate are all playoff squads… which means by the time next week is over, Houston may be playing for nothing but ping-pong balls.
The Front Office of the Phoenix Suns: How on earth do you successfully anger your superstar by telling him that you’re going to trade him, and then turn around and not actually figure out how to do it? Now that the Suns ultimately couldn’t pull the trigger on an F Amare Stoudemire deal, they’re stuck with him for the rest of the season, knowing that he’s declaring free agency right when it’s over. For the brass of this team, they’d better hope that Phoenix hangs on to its playoff spot, or heads are inevitably going to roll.

It was a short week for the NBA betting world, but in spite of that fact, there was still plenty of ups and downs to talk about. Check out Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in the world of the NBA at Bang the Book, brought to you by Sportsbook.com! ATS Power Poll 1: Atlanta Hawks (32-19 ATS): We won’t fault the Hawks for coming up well short against the Heat in the final game before the All-Star Break because of their injuries. A 108-94 victory in Memphis back on Tuesday was key for some self-confidence, especially considering that the first four off of the break are all on the West Coast. 2: Oklahoma City Thunder (32-19 ATS): You’ve been Thunder Struck! Oklahoma City went into the hiatus on a high, winning six straight SU and five of those six ATS. Three huge wins on the road against Western Conference rivals were all clutch to say the least, and with a relatively easy schedule starting on Tuesday night, the Thunder could be in the playoff picture to stay. 3: Utah Jazz (30-18-3 ATS): The Jazz had their opponents singing the blues until the Lakers clipped them 96-81 at home in their final game prior to the season’s intermission. Whereas Utah is 18-9-2 ATS at home, its 12-9-1 mark against the basketball betting lines isn’t quite as strong. The first four next week are all on the road. ATS Power Outage 1: New Jersey Nets (19-32-1 ATS): It’s never good when the turnstiles at your games only read 1,016. That’s what happened to the Nets right before the All-Star Break. One would figure that a chance to see history can’t be missed. After all, how many times in your life will you get to feast your eyes on a team that may not reach five wins on the season? Oh that’s right. Who wants to see the home team get blasted by 20 points on their home court? 2: Boston Celtics (19-30-1 ATS): The break came just at the right time for Celtics bettors, who had to be losing faith in their squad after dropping four straight ATS decisions in a row. The good news for Boston is that it is 13-13 ATS on the road this year, which is where the first four will be next week. At least that may build some momentum before coming back to the Garden on February 23rd. 3: Dallas Mavericks (21-31 ATS): Now that the Mavericks have made a move that has totally changed the face of their team, they’re going to be a tough squad to make NBA picks on. F Caron Butler is certainly going to add some scoring flare, but there’s got to be a question about how well this team will mesh. Things couldn’t get much worse from a bettors standpoint, though. Dallas had failed to cover seven of its L/8. The Good The Bad The Ugly
F LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers: It’s hard to say that LeBron is simply “The Good,” because with the way that he has been playing lately, he’s simply, “The Best.” It was just another week of back-to-back 32-point games for King James, and that came on the heels of a mere 47-point effort against the Knicks and a 36-pointer vs. Miami. Simply put: There isn’t a man that you’d rather have on your NBA team right now than LeBron James.
The Bigs for the Los Angeles Clippers: Ok, I know that it’s hard for you to even find G Stephen Curry on the court considering that he’s only 6′3″ and looks like he is about 120 lbs sopping wet, but how are all ten eyes on the court not on a guy who ends up going for 32 points, ten boards, and 13 assists in the same game? F Rasual Butler and C Chris Kaman were outrebounded by Curry 10-8 on the night. Not good, Clips. Not good at all.
Houston Rockets: Being short-handed may be a good excuse for some teams, but for the Rockets on Tuesday night, there were just no excuses. Houston only scored 66 points in an embarrassing 33-point loss in South Beach against the Heat. G Dwyane Wade’s pedestrian 17 points was more than the Rockets scored in three of the four quarters of action.

This week gave me plenty to rant about with all of the free agent moves in the NBA and the Dallas Cowboys looking like fools. Enter Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks. Mark Cuban has been the most aggressive owner in the league. He made sure Jason Kidd did not leave for the big apple, and then added Shawn Marion to become a force in the west. There are other moves that he has made to solidify the depth of this club by grabbing Marcin Gortat from the Orlanod Magic. The Mavericks get my top grade so far in the NBA free agent market! It was reported yesterday by ex-linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys Greg Ellis that his former teammate DeMarcus Ware hid on the sidelines so he could play. While this is a noble gesture by Ware it may show something more about the Cowboys from a coaching standpoint. To have a player, even of the caliber of Ware miss a play is no big deal and that happens all the time. To even hear that coaches did not know where he was is not surprising because the sidelines get crowded and it can be easy to get lost or to “hide”. What does this say about the Cowboys coaching staff? The players must have zero respect for the coaching staff to do something like this. It shows that they don’t care what the coaches think and they don’t value their decision making so they take matters into their own hands. This kind of selfishness and disregard for the coaches is contagious and will spread. When this story gets around and gets some publicity it will be another black eye on Dallas and will make a rift if any between the coaching staff and the players bigger, which there obviously is one. The bottom line is that there needs to be a coaching change in Dallas and it needs to happen now.
This week there has been plenty of noise made in the free agent market. The race to get the best players on the market has turned into a knock down drag out between ownership. About a week ago I mentioned that so far to me the Pistons had made the best moves in the market, well know that has changed.
This is the first of what promises to be many rants about the Dallas Cowboys. They mess up so much and the team is in so much turmoil it is easy to pick on them and yesterday I just got another reason.

NBA Playoff Betting Preview Betus.com betting line- Denver -8.5, O/U 213.5 Denver leads series 3-1 The Denver Nuggets will have the chance to lock up the series when they host the Dallas Mavericks in Game 5 on Wednesday night. A win would secure Denver the right to play the winner of Houston/Los Angeles in the conference finals. The Dallas Mavericks avoided being swept in 4 games with an exciting 119-117 high scoring victory in Game 4. Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks with a blazing 44 points which prevented the Nuggets from sweeping the series. Denver will be trying to rebound on Wednesday night and avoid losing back to back games. The Nuggets have not lost back to back games since the beginning of March. Fortunately for the Nuggets they have a few trends that bode well heading into the contest. For starters, Denver has yet to lose a playoff game at home and they are also 2-0 against the Mavericks at home this season as well. The Nuggets will try to put together another solid home performance this Wednesday night and take down the series. Dating back to the end of the season, Denver has only been held to less than 100 points in 2 out of their last 25 games. One of the big reasons the Nuggets have performed so well over the last few weeks is that they have shot the ball very well. Denver high scoring offense has just been too much to handle for their opponents throughout the playoffs. Only did a huge night from Dirk Nowitzki finally result in the Nuggets defeat. Carmelo Anthony also had a huge performance in the lost draining 41 points. Anthony has been solid as ever averaging 26.7 points throughout the post-season. Chauncey Billups has also been giving solid effort along with Carmelo averaging over 20 points per game. Add JR Smith to the picture and Denver’s best 3 scorers are responsible for nearly 60 points per game. If things are to take any major turns in this series, Denver will either have to get very cold in terms of shooting or Dallas will have to step up with some defense. Denver was among one of the hottest teams in the league heading into the post-season and so far their momentum has yet to take any major hits as they are just one game away from playing for the right to this year’s NBA Finals. The Mavericks entered the playoffs as fairly large underdogs taking on San Antonio in the first round. After some media scrutiny and predictions that Dallas would get blown away, the Mavericks were out to prove they belonged and beat up on the Spurs in 5 games. However, the Mavericks have simply been over-matched in their series with the Nuggets. Dallas finally put together a big scoring performance in Game 4 that saved the series, but they will have to find away to score a lot of points again in Denver. The team must give some help and not place all the weight on Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk has averaged a stout 26 points throughout his stint in the playoffs, but has not gotten the help needed against the Nuggets. Josh Howard and Jason Terry have both been solid, but not spectacular. Howard has been hampered with an ankle injury early in Game 2 as he should be returning to full strength. Terry has not been as big of factor as the Mavericks would have hoped, but still is averaging 14.5 points per game. One of these two guys needs to have a really big night to help the Mavericks take down the Nuggets in Denver this Wednesday night. Pick – Denver -8.5

NBA Playoff Preview SBG Global Opening Line: Nuggets - 1 , Total 209.5 The Dallas Mavericks will try and avoid elimination on Monday night as they host the Denver Nuggets in Game 4 of their Western Conference semifinal series. The Mavericks probably should only be down 2-1 in this series but a bad call by the referees allowed Denver’s Carmelo Anthony to get away a 3-point shot that he hit to win Game 3 by a score of 106-105 on Saturday. “We’re not going to get that last play back, so just by watching it doesn’t do us any good,” Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki said. SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Mavericks at Home. The NBA has admitted that the referees made a mistake in Game 3 but that doesn’t change the fact that instead of being down 2-1 the Mavericks are down 3-0 in this series. No team in NBA history has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a series so it doesn’t look good for Dallas. The Nuggets though are taking nothing for granted heading into Monday’s game. “We’re going to be aggressive and we’re going to fight extremely hard,” said Denver’s Chauncey Billups, “They’re facing elimination. That’s always the toughest game to win, especially in a sweep situation. They’re going to fight really hard and do everything they can possibly do to keep their season alive.” The Mavericks have never been swept in a four-game series so Monday’s game should be interesting. “These guys have met adversity with unity, with a collective will,” Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said. “It happened in November; we got off to a 2-7 start. It happened in January; we lost four games in a row and everybody said we wouldn’t be a playoff team. It happened after we lost to Oklahoma City … and it’s obviously going to happen now. But, hey, that’s what this is about. When it gets tough, you’ve got to stick together and keep fighting.” Here are the NBA betting stats for Monday’s game. The Nuggets are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games as a road underdog. The Nuggets are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games overall. The Nuggets are 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Dallas. SBG Global Current Line: Mavericks - 1.5 , Total 210 The Mavericks are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a home favorite. The Mavericks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Conference Semifinals games. The Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Dallas between the two teams.

NBA Betting Preview SBG Global Opening Line: Rockets - 5 , Total 186 The Houston Rockets are hoping all of their star players are in the lineup on Wednesday as they host the Dallas Mavericks. Just a day after Houston guard Tracy McGrady said he might be out for a while, he was back at practice. “Right now, tomorrow is not ruled out,” McGrady said about Wednesdays’ game against Dallas, “I have to talk to coach and the trainers, maybe even monitor my minutes more. I could play. We just have to come out with some sort of solution. I don’t want to be out there looking the way I am right now. Me, coach, the trainers have to come up with some sort of solution.” McGrady is questionable for Wednesday but the news regarding Yao Ming and Ron Artest was encouraging. “I got treatment so I will be able to play tomorrow,” Artest said. “I’m ready to play.” Yao had a similar response about playing on Wednesday. “I’m fine, so fine,” Yao said, “The x-ray told me I have no problem. I feel much better this morning.” Dallas had to play last night in Charlotte so they could come into this matchup a little road weary. Here are the NBA betting stats for Wednesday’s game. The Mavericks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Wednesday games. The Mavericks are 40-19-1 ATS in their last 60 vs. the Southwest. The Mavericks are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 games playing on no rest. The Mavericks are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Mavericks are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Houston. NBA Betting Preview SBG Global Opening Line: Mavericks - 1 , Total 202.5 The Denver Nuggets are expected to have Chauncey Billups in the lineup on Friday as they host the Dallas Mavericks. Billups was traded from Detroit on Monday to Denver in exchange for Allen Iverson. Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb were also involved in the deal but basically it was Iverson for Billups. The Nuggets are hoping the addition of Billups will change the makeup of their team. “Hopefully it’s a piece that makes it fit,” head coach George Karl said. The Nuggets lost on Wednesday without Iverson or Billups 111-101 to Golden State. Carmelo Anthony led Denver with 28 points and eight rebounds. Last year Anthony averaged 27.5 points and 8 rebounds per game in the two wins over Dallas. SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Nuggets at Home. Dallas is coming off a 98-81 rout of San Antonio on Tuesday. Jason Terry scored 29 points in the win. “Jet (Terry) really came out,” Dirk Nowitzki said. “We definitely need his offense in our group. Whether he starts or is off the bench, we need his shooting and we need his scoring.” Nowitzki had 30 points in Tuesday’s win. He averaged 32 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games versus Denver last season. The Nuggets have won the last two games in Denver against Dallas. Here are more NBA betting stats for Friday’s game. The Mavericks are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 Friday games. The Mavericks are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 vs. NBA Northwest. The Mavericks are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Denver. NBA Betting Preview The Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks resume their rivalry on Thursday in Dallas in a nationally televised game on TNT. The Rockets lead the all-time series against Dallas 74-62 but Dallas holds a 35-32 edge against the Rockets at home. The last time the teams met at Dallas the Rockets won 113-98 as Tracy McGrady had 31 points. Josh Howard led the Mavericks in that game with 21 points. That win by the Rockets broke a six game losing streak against Dallas. The Mavericks have had to wait a long time to play their season opener, as almost all of the other teams in the league opened on Tuesday or Wednesday. The opener will not be easy as Houston is a team that many experts like in the Western Conference this season. “They’re one of a select few that is a real serious championship contender,” Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said. “Of the teams I’ve seen, there as good as, or better than, any of them. They’re a tough matchup with their three star players. We’re going to have to be real good defensively as a team to beat them. That’s just a fact.” Here are the NBA betting stats for Thursday’s game. The Rockets are 24-8-3 ATS in their last 35 Thursday games. The Rockets are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 vs. the Southwest. The Rockets are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games playing on no rest. The Rockets are 28-13-1 ATS in their last 42 games overall. The road team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between the two teams. NBA Playoff Betting Preview SBG Global Opening Line: Hornets – 6, Total 193 The New Orleans Hornets will try and put away the Dallas Mavericks as the teams meet in game #5 on Tuesday night. The Mavericks are one game away from yet another first round failure. Chris Paul dominated the Mavericks in the first two games of the series and it was David West that did the Mavericks in on Sunday. He had 24 points while Peja Stojakovic added 19 points. “We’ve gotten them out of rhythm on the offensive end because of our defense … and that’s going to continue because we understand how important it is for us to play defense to win this series,” Hornets coach Byron Scott said. “We have a lot of confidence that we can win this series. Obviously right now, being up 3-1, we’ve put ourselves in a pretty good position to make sure that happens.” SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Hornets at Home. Dallas could be playing their last game with their current roster. Head coach Avery Johnson could be in trouble along with a lot of the veterans on the Dallas squad. “We’ve got to show some heart, compete until the end, never give up,” Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki said. Nowtizki is averaging 28 points per game in the series but other than Jason Terry not many other players have been helping including Jason Kidd who looks old and tired. SBG Global Current Line: Hornets – 6, Total 193 Here are the NBA betting stats for Tuesday’s game. The Mavericks are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 playoff games as an underdog. The Mavericks are 38-18-1 ATS in their last 57 vs. the Southwest. The Mavericks are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as a road underdog. The Hornets are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 playoff games as a favorite. The Hornets are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 Tuesday games. The Hornets are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 Conference Quarterfinals games. The Hornets are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games as a home favorite. The home team is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings between the two teams.
