NCAA Betting Preview Bookmaker.com betting line – Villanova -4.5 The No. 10 Marquette Golden Eagles suffered their very first Big East Conference lost on Saturday when they were upset by the South Florida Bulls 57-56. The Golden Eagles are now in a 3 way tie for first place and in need to get back to their winning ways. However, the No. 13 Villanova Wildcats have been playing exceptionally well over the last few weeks winning 5 straight games including big wins over The Golden Eagles actually lead the extremely strong Big East in scoring offense averaging 80.2 points per game that also ranks 14th nationally. Marquette is a talented team that many people are not giving the credit they deserve. Senior standout guard Jerel McNeal is one of only 3 players in the Big East that is averaging 20 points per game while shooting an amazing 47% from behind the arc. Lazar Hayward is an important figure for the Golden Eagles inside presence nearly in double Hayward is nearly posting double-double averages with 15 points and 9 rebounds per contest and will be an important person in taking down the Wildcats on Tuesday night. The Golden Eagles scoring attack will face a big challenge against one of the conference’s better defensive teams and it will be interesting to see if Marquette can avoid losing two straight. Villanova really gets after it on both ends of the court and they will attempt to score their 6th straight victory. The Wildcats rank 2nd in defensive shooting efficiency holding opponents to a low 37% on the season. Villanova enters the game off a big blowout win over Syracuse by the score of 105-82. Dante Cunningham had a huge night with 31 points and 10 rebounds against the Orange. Cunningham leads the team in scoring 17.8 points while aiding with 7.4 rebounds. Junior guard Scottie Reynolds has also been stellar this season posting 15 points per game this season. The last two games the Wildcats have participated in have been scoring shootouts that have reached the over 185 total in both games. Their meeting with Marquette has the possibility to reach another high total considering two stout offenses will take the court, but the Wildcats will try to use defense to help get the victory. Tags: ACC, college basketball, Duke Blue Devils, Wake Forest Demon Deacons
January 27th, 2009
NCAA Betting Preview Bookmaker.com betting line - The new top ranked team in the nation the Duke Blue Devils take to the road to battle the former top ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The Blue Devils have knocked off 10 straight victories since their only loss this season to Wake Forest has been stellar on the floor this season and sports one of the highest scoring offenses in the nation averaging 85 points per game. The Demon Deacons are the only team to be in the top 6 in rebounds, scoring, and field goal percentage. Wake Forest has won 4 of the last 6 games against the Blue Devils at home and they will try to keep the trend in tact. Jeff Teague will lead the Demon Deacons offensive attack. The sophomore guard is averaging a team high 21.5 points which is also 2nd best in the ACC. The Demon Deacons also lead the ACC in both field goal percentage (50.5%) and field goal percentage against (36.9%), but will Wake Forest have enough to overcome the very talented and disciplined Blue Devils. Duke gained the top ranking in the nation last week thanks to the Demon Deacons upset loss to Virginia Tech and got enough votes for the top spot. The Blue Devils have simply dominated the ACC early in conference play and are the only team left to be undefeated in the conference. The Blue Devils are also among one of the best scoring teams across the country averaging 80 points per game. Duke is led by the play of sophomore Kyle Singler who is posting 16.5 points and 8.1 boards per contest. However, it is the play of junior Gerald Henderson who has really lifted the Blue Devils in recent weeks. Henderson is averaging 14.5 points per game this season but has knocked down 21 points on average over the last 5 outing. Henderson gives the Blue Devils the break out threat that they need and Duke will need big performances from their entire starting lineup to hold off a tough challenge on the road from Wake Forest. What to watch for… The Blue Devils defense has been the big asset for them all season. Coach K and company present some of the best defensive schemes across the country. Duke held Maryland and Virginia Tech an embarrassing 44 points. The Blue Devils defense will be the big deciding factor in this game again. If they can keep Jeff Teague from posting big numbers and keep the scoring down, the Blue Devils will stay on top. However, that task is easier said than done. NCAA Basketball Preview Bookmaker.com betting line – North Carolina -14 The No. 5 North Carolina Tarheels host the No. 10 Clemson Tigers tonight in Chapel Hill in a big ACC conference match-up. Clemson dropped their first loss last weekend 78-68 from the hands of No. 1 Wake Forest. North Carolina has won two games in a row after losing two in one week against Boston College and Wake Forest. The game has big aspirations for both teams in terms of ACC regular season hopes. Clemson lost their first conference game last weekend and North Carolina has already lost two. Neither team can afford anymore losses as they both trial Duke and Wake Forest who are undefeated in conference play. Clemson has the chance to gain a lot of respect among the national audience if they could pull of the win as big underdogs tonight. The Tarheels own one of the deepest and talented lineups in America lead by superstar Tyler Hansbrough. Hansbrough is sporting a strong 22.9 points and 8 rebounds per game for the season. North Carolina ranks 2nd in the nation in scoring racking up an amazing 93 points per contest. The Tarheels have also dominated the boards with 43 rebounds per game that ranks in the Top 5 in the country as well. North Carolina’s year started out very well as they seemed to be the best team in America for many weeks of the early season. However with stumbles in recent weeks, North Carolina has to get back on the right track to prove their national status. The Tarheels have won 9 straight games over the Tigers and will try to avoid their first loss from Clemson since January of 2004. The Clemson Tigers started the season with a perfect 16-0 record before their first loss last week. Clemson has averaged 80 points per game while shooting 49% as a team from the floor which both rank in the top 30 across the land. The Tigers main performer comes from that of Trevor Booker. The junior forward has been responsible for 15 points and 9 boards in every outing this season. Booker inside presence will play huge dividends for the Tigers tonight in Chapel Hill. Clemson must find a way to be effective inside the paint and then receive help from the outside shooting of Terrence Oglesby. Oglesby is shooting 41% from behind the arc and his ability to knock down the three could be what gives the Tigers hope tonight. What to watch for… Pick – Clemson keeps it close. The NCAA Championship Game The time is finally upon us. We have watched an entire season of college basketball. We watched great young freshmen make their mark in the game and great in conference play. We watched the great conference tournaments and feverishly filled out our brackets as the tournament seedings were announced. We watched those same brackets get shattered as great underdogs made the early run but when the dust settled, for the first time in history, all number one seeds made it to the final four in San Antonio Texas. The story lines have played out and the players and the coaches have been acknowledged of the best of the best but now it comes down to just two teams playing for the championship in college basketball. Memphis The first team to make the big game is Memphis. Memphis has held the number one spot most of the year in the national polls and won the conference tournament grabbing a number one seed for the NCAA tournament. Yet they were one of the first number one seeds that were predicted to make an early exit. No one outside of Tennessee thought this team had a shot to go this far, especially when they ran into Texas heading to the final four and the answered the call with a thumping of Texas. The critics still shunned it off and said there would be no way they would beat UCLA. After all UCLA had the experience and had been to the final four and were led by Kevin Love so there would be no way they could lose to Memphis but indeed they did. Memphis thumped the Bruins by double digits and Derrick Rose showed that he may be the best player on the court. The critics are quieter but still out there and Memphis has one more game to play. Kansas Kansas was the opposite of Memphis because they won all year and got respect for it. They came into the tournament as a number one seed and plenty of so called experts called on them to get this far. As they went through the teams to get this far they mopped the floor with lesser talent and it led up to a meeting with the North Carolina tarheels in the final four. The story lines were abundant as Roy Williams would be marching the opposing side line and had some history with Kansas. For sure this would be one of the better games of the year, but it wasn’t. The hype was over played and the teams took the court and North Carolina promptly fell behind big early. They started a valiant comeback but it was Brandon Rush for the Jayhawks that held on to the win and pulled away for a huge win for Kansas. Now they face Memphis and there is no more questions, no more doubting just one more game to play. The Winner This line has opened up at Kansas -1.5 and slipped to Memphis as a chalk in some places. The thing to know here is to look around as this line is jumping with the amount of action coming in on it. The winner of this game will have to play all facets of the game and be fundamentally sound. Coaching is a sweet edge but I just can’t get over the fact that Memphis can’t hit free throws. It has not hurt them so far but if this game is close it will. I like Kansas to win this game and win the NCAA Championship! Final Four Betting Preview SBG Global Opening Line: Memphis  - 1, Total 133.5  The high scoring Memphis Tigers will try and play a fast paced game on Saturday while the UCLA Bruins will try and slow things down. It should be an interesting contrast in the second game of the Final Four. The Tigers have the top scorer left in the tournament in Chris Douglas-Roberts (90 points) while UCLA has All-American Kevin Love who has scored 87 points. The Tigers also have Derrick Rose who is right behind those two with 82 points scored in the tournament. SBG Global reports that the public taking Memphis on the Road.  This will be the third straight Final Four for UCLA while it is the Tigers first Final Four appearance since 1985. The Tigers are taking this very seriously though as Joey Dorsey was seen practicing with former Memphis NBA star Penny Hardaway this week. The Tigers don’t seem worried about UCLA trying to slow the game down. “It doesn’t really matter. They can’t really dictate the tempo unless we allow them to,” Douglas-Roberts said. The Tigers and Bruins met two years ago when UCLA took Memphis out of their game and won 50-45 in the regional final. Chris Douglas-Roberts was just a freshman in that game and didn’t play that well. It is different now as Douglas-Roberts has more experience. “His ability to shoot balls. His ability to score in traffic. His physical play because he’s gained weight. You’re not going to throw him around and do stuff they did in that game,” Memphis head coach John Calipari said. The Bruins will try and contain Douglas-Roberts with Russell Westbrook who is an outstanding defender.  Here are the stats for Saturday’s game. The Tigers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 vs. the Pacific-10.  The Bruins are 22-7-1 ATS in their last 30 games as an underdog. The Bruins are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games.  The Over is 4-0 in the Tigers last 4 neutral site games. The Over is 4-0 in the Tigers last 4 non-conference games. The Over is 5-0 in the Tigers last 5 NCAA Tournament games. The Under is 4-0 in the Tigers last 4 vs. the Pacific-10.  The Over is 4-1 in the Bruins last 5 games as an underdog. The Over is 7-2 in the Bruins last 9 Saturday games. The Under is 6-2 in the Bruins last 8 NCAA Tournament games as an underdog. The Under is 16-6 in the Bruins last 22 NCAA Tournament games.  Pick: Take Memphis -2 5units! For more Final Four discussion visit the College Basketball Betting Forum.
