The Uruguayans may have played a heck of a tournament to date, but they have no business being in the semifinals of the World Cup. F Luis Suarez deliberately batted a ball off of his own goal line with his hands in the 120th minute that would’ve broken a 1-1 tie and sent Ghana into the semis. Though he was red carded and suspended for this fixture, it won’t make the last African side standing feel any better about the situation. To Uruguay’s credit, it did come out and win the penalty shootout 4-2 with only one misfire in the duel. F Diego Forlan deservedly won Man of the Match honors after scoring in the second half on a beautiful direct free kick and being the first to score in the sudden death shootout. The South Americans are going to have to play sturdy defense once again to get around the Dutch in this one. Uruguay has allowed a goal in each of the L/2 matches after not conceding a single strike in group stage.
F Wesley Sneijder has been a real hero for the Dutch all World Cup long. Holland has yet to do anything but win a match in 90 minutes in this tournament, making it the only team left in the tournament that can say that. Sneijder has four goals in his L/4 matches, which leaves him just one shy of Spain’s David Villa in the chase for the Golden Boot. F Arjen Robben really has yet to make a major impact on this tournament, though he does have a goal to his credit. The Dutch defense has had a huge World Cup, keeping teams to a total of just three goals, but one of those goals was scored in each of the L/3 matches. The unit will be without M Nigel de Jong and D Gregory van der Wiel for certain due to their suspensions and most likely without D Joris Mathijsen, who was a late scratch from the Brazil match with a knee injury sustained in warm ups.
Holland simply has the better side in this tussle. There is no reason to believe that a goal won’t be scored at some point by one of those advancing forwards. A response by Uruguay is possible, but really isn’t all that likely unless Forlan puts forth a moment of true magic. We tend to believe that the Dutch are going to get their acts together and pitch a clean sheet in this one and advance relatively easily in the 90 minutes.
