Brazil might have the easiest road to the World Cup Finals of any team in this tournament, but Chile is going to stand in the way of the yellow and green in the Round of 16 on Monday night in Johannesburg, South Africa. These two teams met twice before in qualifying for the World Cup with the Brazilians taking both fixtures by a 7-2 aggregate score. The winner will be looking forward to a date with either Holland or Slovakia in soccer’s version of the Elite 8.

The “Group of Death” was supposed to challenge Brazil and perhaps set up the first time since 1966 that the winningest team in this tournament’s history failed to make the second round. However, convincing wins over both North Korea and the Ivory Coast set up a very easy fixture against Portugal. A 0-0 draw wasn’t exactly the picture of excellence in this great tournament, but it was more than good enough to take care of winning Group G. Kaka, arguably the most important player in the Brazilian midfield was suspended for that match due to his red card against Ivory Coast. Look out for both Fs Luis Fabiano and Elano who have netted a pair of goals apiece. Both would love to strike the back of the net to get back into the race for the Golden Boot.
The Chileans may have gotten six points from their first two matches in Group H, but a defeat against Spain nearly got them knocked out of the World Cup. This team has only scored three goals over the course of the group stages and no one on the team has netted more than one goal. A 1-0 win against Honduras probably wasn’t the best result in the world, but had you told manager Marcelo Bielsa that his squad would be getting through to the second round in spite of the narrow one goal win against the weakest team in the group, he would absolutely take it. This is a team that isn’t afraid to run with Brazil, as it will try to do more than just counterattack with at least two, if not three forwards at all times.
The first two matches between these teams both had at least three goals, as Brazil won 3-0 away and 4-2 at home. We expect another high scoring match in this one, which is against the trend of what we have seen in the first 50 matches in this tournament. Bank on at least three goals in this one as well in what could be a very, very entertaining World Cup betting battle between two South American squads.
