For the United States of America, many feel as though this is the make or break year for the country’s soccer team. After a strong showing in the 2009 Confederations Cup here in South Africa that saw the team just narrowly lose out in the finale to Brazil, hopes are high in Group C. This match with England may not be the match to end all matches, but a victory against the Three Lions would upstage the 1950 “Miracle on Grass” that the Americans pulled off against the Mother Land. Attacking is going to come a lot out of the midfield, as Ms Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan are going to be cogs in attack. However, the pressure will be squarely on the shoulders of GK Tim Howard and the defense. Manager Bob Bradley knows that a point from this match is good enough, and the Americans may not necessarily be going for broke.

England is rightfully one of the huge favorites to win the World Cup. This is a team that is fully stacked with a ton of talented players even though D Rio Ferdinand won’t be playing in this tournament. Still, M Frank Lampard, M Stephen Gerrard, F Wayne Rooney, F Jermain Defoe, and F Peter Crouch are all still around on this club and will certainly be tremendously difficult to stop. The Brits haven’t won the World Cup since 1966 when the tournament was on their home soil, but this year is expected to be a lot different. Rooney in particular is seemingly putting the team on his shoulders, as he scored nine goals in as many qualifying matches for this event that he played in.

Odds have it, this is going to be a relatively ugly match. Both the USA and England know that regardless of the outcome of this match, that doing what they are supposed to do against Algeria and Slovenia will put both squads through. A draw seems to be most likely option, but the more motivated team is clearly the USA. We’ll take the goal given to us and hope for at least a draw, but the Stars and Stripes do have a real chance of being triumphant in this one.
