Holland was absolutely dominant in Group E, blowing through Japan, Denmark, and Cameroon with a 5-1 goal advantage. The health of F Arjen Robben seems to be improved and perhaps he will be in the starting 11 on Monday with his hamstring injury. Robben came on in the final minutes of the match against Cameroon on Thursday and created a number of chances, including the game winner that he helped set up for Klaas Jan Hunterlaar. There was never a point that La Oranje was really challenged in the group stage, and this is most likely the easiest fixture that they will run across in this tournament. The defense for this team has been absolutely fantastic as well, allowing just one goal from the penalty spot after conceding just two goals in the ten qualifying matches for the World Cup in Europe.
Of the 16 teams that made it to the second round of this tournament, none got here in more improbable fashion than the Slovakians. They needed a miracle of a win against Italy and a result that wasn’t a win for New Zealand against Paraguay on the final match day in Group F. M Robert Vittek is a hero in his homeland at this point. Vittek had scored the lone goal for the Slovaks coming into this final match against the defending World Cup champs, and my, did he come up in a big way on Thursday. Vittek found the back of the net twice against the Azzurri to pull the huge upset. Slovakia needed to score three times to fend off the comeback from the Italians to get through from Group F. This is the lowest ranked team in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Hopefully for the Slovaks, the FIFA ranking won’t end up coming back to bite them, but realistically speaking, Holland is just playing too well to be beaten. We are going to have to lay a goal to back La Oranje in this one, but it’s hard to see how anything but a regulation victory by at least that one goal being the result in this one. Holland is the pick to win by multiple goals, but even a ‘W’ by one strike is good enough to get our money back.
