Paraguay has a lot going against it in this tournament from here on out. For starters, this is completely uncharted waters for the South American side. The Paraguayans have never made it to the quarterfinals of this tournament before this year. However, in spite of the fact that they advanced into this stage, they still have yet to score a goal in four Round of 16 battles in their country’s history. To make matters worse, the forwards on this team still have yet to find the back of the net in any other capacity than in the shootout that Paraguay won over Japan earlier in the week. Roque Santa Cruz still remains upset as could be about the fact that the front three for Paraguay cannot break through with the ever important strike. The good news is that this has been a dominant defensive team throughout this tournament, as the only goal that it conceded was an equalizer surrendered to Italy in the opening match after taking a 1-0 lead early on.

Spain hasn’t been playing the flashiest soccer that the world has ever seen, but it played about as dominant of a 1-0 match as a team can possibly play against Portugal earlier this week. David Villa continues to be the most valuable player in this tournament, as he has four goals for La Roja. Without Villa’s efforts, including his strike against the Portuguese, who knows where the Spanish would be at this point and whether or not they even would have advanced out of the first round of this tournament. Still, the wheels are starting to turn a lot more efficiently around Villa as well, as everyone is seemingly doing their share for the Spanish cause. GK Iker Casillas continues to be dominant, as he has only conceded one goal since allowing the Swiss to score in the opening match of this tournament in Group H.

Paraguay is just in over its head in this match. If it tries to pull this same sort of stunt it did against Japan by playing ten players behind the ball, this match could get very, very ugly. It’s hard to see how La Roja aren’t winning by at least one goal, and a multi-goal performance is what we expect to see, as Spain puts its foot down as the firm favorite to win it all.
