The Germans are going to be hurting without F Thomas Mueller in the lineup on Wednesday. Mueller has scored four goals to tie for the team lead, and he has been a real influence offensively for this squad during the entire tournament. However, the Germans aren’t just posting the best offensive numbers in the World Cup thanks to one person. F Miroslav Klose is to thank just as much. The veteran of this team has scored four times as well. Both Klose and Mueller are one goal off of the pace in the chase for the Golden Boot award. Klose also knows that one more strike, regardless of whether or not it helps win the Golden Boot or not, will tie him for the most goals in a career in the World Cup, tying the great Ronaldo for Brazil. Klose would also become the first man in the history of the tournament to score at least five goals in three different World Cups.

Whereas Germany has been lighting the world on fire offensively, there has been no quit in the Spanish defense. GK Iker Casillas has been perfect during the knockout rounds of this tournament, posting back-to-back clean sheets and shutouts. In fact, Casillas has only surrendered one goal since allowing a soft one in against Switzerland in the opening match of the tournament for the favorites. Spain has its own offensive powder keg, though. His name is F David Villa, and coming into this round of the tournament, he was the leader for the Golden Boot with five strikes. Since that point, Holland’s F Wesley Sneijder has leveled him, as he scored his fifth goal of the tournament in a 3-2 win over Uruguay. The problem that Spain has had in this World Cup is generating offense aside from Villa. Only M Andres Iniesta has scored, and that was back in the Chile match in Group H play.

This should be a very close run match the entire way. This is certainly too close to call for 90 minutes, as any result could happen. Still, we tend to think that the Spanish defense is just better than that of the Germans, and that will probably make the difference. If it goes all the way to a shootout, we prefer Casillas over any other keeper in the world. GK Gianluigi Buffon won the World Cup four years ago Italy in a shootout. Casillas may do the same for Spain in 2010.
