Manager Diego Maradona may be slightly out of his mind, but he has certainly figured out how to get the most out of his squad in this year’s World Cup. Gonzalo Higuain has four strikes to his credit in this tournament after tallying one of the three goals in a 3-1 romp of Mexico in the Round of 16. The Argentines are now at a +8 goal differential in four matches, the best such mark in the tournament. As each match passes, the pressure on Lionel Messi mounts. The young Argentine phenom has still not scored a goal in the World Cup in his career in spite of the fact that he is largely accepted as one of the most talented offensive players in the entire world. Goal keeping could be a bit of an issue for Argentina, as there hasn’t been a ton of pressure on Sergio Romero in this tournament. However, the Mexicans had several chances at net, and mistakes were made. Those mistakes, if made again, will certainly turn into German goals on Saturday.

Let’s give Germany some credit for having a +7 goal differential in spite of the fact that it lost a match to Serbia in this tournament. The Germans have beaten down all three of their opponents in their wins in the 2010 World Cup, including issuing a 4-1 smack down to England last Sunday. Miroslav Klose has scored 12 goals in his World Cup career, including two in this tournament. With three more strikes, he will catch Brazilian Ronaldo for the most all time in the World Cup (15). Klose isn’t the leading scorer on this team this year, though. His teammate Thomas Mueller is after he scored twice in a span of less than ten minutes against the Three Lions to take a comfortable 2-1 lead and make it an unassailable 4-1 lead. Germany has also yet to concede a goal with a full side on the pitch, as the one strike allowed to Serbia came after Lukas Podolski was dismissed, reducing the Germans to just ten men on the field.

Argentina is the sexier pick in this spot, especially considering how much the press loves to circle around the names Maradona and Messi. However, the Germans are putting together workmanlike performances, and we tend to think that they won’t just be advancing, but that they will do so in 90 minutes and pull off a big shocker. However, just to be safe, we’ll just bet on them to advance at modest odds.
