Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Florida Gators Picks: 2011 College Basketball Picks

Vanderbilt Commodores
(15-5, 8-7-1 ATS)

Florida Gators
(16-5, 7-10 ATS)

The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Florida Gators are both trying to stay in front of the Kentucky Wildcats in the SEC East. The two will have a big time showdown in Gainesville on Tuesday night in one of the biggest NCAA basketball betting battles of the day.

The ‘Dores are coming off of a bad loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks at home that really hurt and stopped a three game winning streak. It was the first loss of the SEC campaign on that weird court in Nashville, but Vandy is only 3-5 ATS the this season. Though they are just 1-2 SU and ATS on the road this year, the two losses were both very close, a three point loss at the Tennessee Volunteers, and an eight point defeat in OT at the South Carolina Gamecocks. John Jenkins is the leading scorer for the Commodores this year at 19.1 points per game, and there is no doubt that he is one of the best players in the entire conference. Festus Ezeli is going to be the man to keep an eye on in the post. He might not quite be living up to his potential as a rebounder at just 6.2 per game, but with 13.0 points and 2.4 blocks per game, he is certainly getting the job done on both ends of the court. Jeffrey Taylor, fresh off of a 13 point showing against the Hogs, is the team’s second leading scorer at 15.2 points per game.

The Gators have won a ton of games this year at the O’Connell Center, as they are 9-3 SU there. However, they’re just 2-7 ATS at home on the campaign, and they have really drawn the ire of those backing them on the NCAA basketball betting lines. A 71-64 loss at the Mississippi State Bulldogs was a bit surprising for a team that was really on a roll going towards the end of January, and it is a bad foreshadowing of what’s ahead for them. Once again, depth is rearing its ugly head for Florida. The team only had two double digit scorers against the Bulldogs, Erving Walker and Vernon Walker. Chandler Parsons was a point short of a double-double, but Alex Tyus and Kenny Boynton were nowhere to be found. When that happens, there isn’t enough on the bench to really help out. Erik Murphy did score seven points, but he accounted for almost half of the 17 points that the bench had in total. The Gators are also in trouble when they don’t play optimal defense. They allow just 61.7 points per game this year, one of the top marks in the SEC.

We’re just not so sold that the Gators are all that good. We know that Vandy isn’t either, but we know that there are going to be a lot of points on our side on the NCAA basketball odds. Take the ‘Dores on the road.
