Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. West Virginia Mountaineers Preview and Pick

Rutgers Scarlet Knights
(4-7, 2-9 ATS)

West Virginia Mountaineers
(8-3, 7-4 ATS)

The Big East title and a trip to the BCS could be on the line for the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale in Morgantown, as they play host to the lowly Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

It’s been a rough season for HC Greg Schiano and company, mostly because he hasn’t been able to find a quarterback to take over since QB Mike Teel left when the program was at its peak. Neither QB Chas Dodd nor QB Tom Savage have been able to get the job done. Dodd has thrown for 1,498 yards and nine TDs against seven picks, while Savage, the highly touted sophomore, was benched after throwing for 521 yards and two TDs against three INTs. Here’s the other problem that we have with Rutgers: The rushing game is dreadful as well. Sure, RB Jordan Thomas and RB Jeremy Deering both have over 300 yards on the ground, and RB Joe Martinek is still good for some decent games when he’s healthy, but there isn’t a dominating rusher. Mr. Do It All, Mohamed Sanu has 160 passing yards, 309 rushing yards, 404 receiving yards, and has even punted a couple times on the year, but he just doesn’t have the men around him to make that trickiness pay off. Instead, the Scarlet Knights are often held down for long stretches of games, and if that’s what happens on Saturday, they’re going to be dead in the water.

The Mountaineers finally cracked the Top 25, making them the first team in six weeks out of the Big East to graze the BCS rankings, but a loss here would be devastating. Winning this game would heap the pressure on the Connecticut Huskies on Saturday night down in South Florida, as they would have to beat the Bulls to win the conference crown. A WVU win and a UConn loss sends the Mountaineers back to the BCS once more. HC Bill Stewart has done some great work with his defense this year, as this unit ranks No. 3 overall at 253.0 yards per game allowed and No. 2 in scoring at 12.6 points per game allowed. The problem has come on offense, where QB Geno Smith hasn’t quite evolved properly yet, while RB Noel Devine was complete non-existent in his senior season. Smith is the first drop back passer the ‘Neers have had in at least a decade, and though he has 22 TDs against six picks, he also has only thrown for 2,215 yards. Devine has arguably been the biggest disappointment in the country. He only has 855 yards and six scores on the ground, numbers that many thought he would have after five or six games this year.

There isn’t enough offense for Rutgers to win this game, but there might not be enough offense for West Virginia to cover this spread either. If the Scarlet Knights could just find a way to scratch ten points onto the scoreboard, we’d feel really, really good about our chances for victory in this one. Back the Scarlet Knights and take the three TDs, the WVU will never be in danger of losing SU.
