Betus.com betting line – Pittsburgh -6.5

College Football Friday night returns back to the east coast this week when the Louisville Cardinals host just the 2nd Big East conference game of the season. The Cardinals have fell by way of the losing side at a season mark of 1-2, but hope to square things up again when they host the Pittsburgh Panthers this Friday. Pittsburgh is off to a solid 3-1 start coming off their first loss of the year to North Carolina State 38-31 last weekend. The Panthers played the Wolf Pack very well in the meeting, but could not capture the victory. However, Pittsburgh gets the chance to right the ship if they can get their first win in the Big East on the road in Louisville.

The Panthers biggest strength this season was suppose to lie on the defensive side of the ball. Pittsburgh is very talented on the defensive front with players like Greg Romeus and Jabaal Sheard. The Panthers forced the 2nd most sacks in the Big East last season averaging 2.46 per game and ranked in the top 30 teams in the nation in rush defense. The Panthers are even better this season as they have dominated up front capturing a mind boggling 17 sacks in just 4 games. Pittsburgh ranks 2nd in the country in total sacks and is safe to say the defense will likely be in the Cardinals backfield again this Friday night. The question is if Louisville QB Justin Burke will be able to handle the pressure and keep from making any valuable mistakes.

Burke has had enough struggles this year being sacked 7 times and completing just 51% on the season. Burke has thrown just 3 touchdown passes while throwing 4 picks this season. The junior is averaging over 200 yards per game this season, but as stated before it will be interesting to see if the interceptions continue if the Panthers stay in the backfield. Wide receivers Scott Long and Doug Beaumont are the two biggest targets from Burke who have combined for nearly 30 catches and over 400 yards this season.

The Pittsburgh secondary has been subject to giving up plays so it will be interesting to see if the Cardinals can establish success. Cardinals running back Victor Anderson is also sure to get some touches carrying a 5.2 yards per carry ratio. However, considering how talented the front 4 are for the Panthers, Alexander may find things to be a bit tougher this Friday night. Louisville best shot to beat the Pittsburgh defense is to find some holes in the zone coverage in the secondary and get some help from the offensive line.

The Panthers offense has definitely grown accustomed to scoring touchdowns. Pittsburgh is averaging 38 points per game so far this season and even racked up 31 points in the loss to a solid North Carolina State defense. The offensive line has been very good allowing just 2 sacks on the year and more importantly has paved the way for running back Dion Lewis. Of course Lewis makes plays on his own as well sporting a 5.7 yards per carry averaged and the sensational freshman already has 493 yards on the season.

Lewis leads the Big East in total rushing yards in his first year and has been the playmaker the Panthers offense desperately needed after losing LeSean McCoy last season. QB Bill Stull is also a proven player. The senior quarterback has thrown 8 touchdown passes to just 1 interception this year. Stull gives the Panthers offense the leadership needed to win some games this year and just maybe Pittsburgh could be one of the surprise teams in the conference this year.

Betting Trends-

Pittsburgh is 8-4 ATS in their last 12 games on the road and have also reached the over total in 5 of the last 7 games on the road. Pittsburgh is also a healthy 12-4 SU in their last 16 games. The Cardinals have not been near as good against the books going 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games. Louisville is also a disappointing 1-7 SU in their last 8 games.

Pick – This is the same Panthers team that blasted Louisville last season 41-7. The Panthers appear to be even better this year as well. Take Pitt -6.5

Amtrak’s pursuit of profits. (National Railroad Passenger Corp.)

Railway Age March 1, 1991 | Roberts, Robert Amtrak’s $1.3 billion in revenue last year (fiscal year 1990 ended Sept. 30, 1990) set a new record but fell below the company’s goal for reaching break-even by 2000. it’s still in reach, and an idea that might be called wrap-around profits may make it possible.

Despite higher ridership, Amtrak’s revenue to cost ratio remained at 72%, leveling off after years of increases. To increase that ratio on a regular basis, Amtrak must increase its for-profit lines of business. The largest piece of the for-profit-$177.4 million-came from commuter and state-supported operations. Another piece headed other” totaled $122.9 million. This includes services performed, such as Beech Grove Shop’s car building and maintenance for other railroads and transit properties, co-generation, etc. Development of real estate and leases for station businesses brought another $39.3 million to the table, while mail and express business contributed $38.4 million. It is this last category that Amtrak is pinning a lot on for bringing the closely watched revenue to cost ratio up to 100%.

* Expanding M&E. In a report delivered to the Transportation Research Board’s annual meeting in Washington, Donald R. Skinner, manager of mail and express sales for Amtrak, said the M&E revenue now has grown to $45 million a year. Ten years ago M&E income was only $14 million. By 2000, Amtrak believes M&E will contribute more than $ 100 million a year. The plan calls for continued use of baggage-express cars on the head end and new RoadRailer trailers on the rear end. The U.S. Postal Service is providing research money for Amtrak to develop a RoadRailer express operation over the next two to three years. go to web site amtrak promotion code

The M&E operation has been a captive of Amtrak’s passenger network; it can only deliver the mail and packages where Amtrak stops for passengers. While the company serves 500 points, only 200 have cargo services. Said Skinner, “The challenge for Amtrak is to mold the passenger network into a viable M&E operation.” RoadRailers, which can be removed from the rear end of a passenger train to continue to their destination over the highway, address Amtrak’s network constraints.

Amtrak’s biggest M&E customer is the U.S. Postal Service, but a promising growth area is the business of corporate shippers. Amtrak is gearing up to handle more and heavier shipments. So far, it has the capability to handle palletized freight at 30 major cities. The attraction is speeds that are truck competitive to certain locations, and reliability at lower cost. According to Skinner, Amtrak provides overnight services between Chicago and the East Coast and second-day arrival from Chicago to the West Coast. Service between most points Amtrak serves is from two to three days, maximum, while arrivals from New York to the West Coast are third day, and from Boston, fourth day.

* An alternative to air express. Another TRB speaker substantiated Amtrak’s claim to fast, low-cost service. Indeed, Robert Schwayer, transportation manager for Abbott Laboratories, said his company is using Amtrak for some of its business instead of air express. He described Abbott’s typical package of medical supplies as from 15 to 18 pounds, which, he said, was “tailored to air express.” However, “Amtrak can deliver such a package in about the same time for 40% lower cost. So now we offer our customers our standard second-day service by Amtrak or for a higher price, our guaranteed second-day service by air.” Since Amtrak’s on-time performance has been 96%, there still is room for improvement. The on-time performance by air is 981/2% to 99%, he said. But for those who can accept slightly slower delivery or don’t require guaranteed delivery, Amtrak is fine, he added. web site amtrak promotion code

Abbott also uses a third party to handle pickup and delivery services and weighing and metering of packages. The trucker will haul Abbott’s packages at Chicago either to a truck terminal or to Union Station for AmMA. United Parcel Service delivers the package at destination at eastern delivery points. Abbott began using Amtrak between Chicago and Washington, D.C., but has expanded its usage to additional eastern cities.

Amtrak, and railroads generally, see a growing niche for themselves in handling freight at lower cost where reliability is acceptable. According to Abbott’s Schwayer, Abbott’s customers are not demanding “instant delivery,” but a reasonable time and a lower cost.

* RoadRailer’s longer reach. Amtrak believes RoadRailers may become the basis for a much more rapidly growing express business because they would allow the company to serve off-line points. Thus, a passenger network that has not changed much over the years and isn’t expected to in the near future no longer will be the constraint for the handling of profitable M&E business it once was. So don’t be surprised to look out the rear end of your train in the days ahead to view from one to three trailers instead of the rails disappearing into the horizon.

In addition to rapidly growing M&E volume, which the company notes does not come off freight railroads but rather off air express planes or trucks, it expects its real estate revenues to more than double over the next decade. It will receive more revenue from state commuter authorities, with the total at about $200 million in the next five years. And it expects to be the operator of one or more high-speed rail operations as they get built in the next decade. According to the High Speed Rail Association, there are nearly two dozen high speed lines in various stages of planning.

* Ridership rising. Amtrak believes there is a growing trend to use Amtrak passenger trains as well. One factor contributing to growth is rising air fares. And the war in the Persian Gulf combined with an economic slowdown to reduce airline ridership. Meanwhile, train ridership continues to rise. Last year, passenger-miles totaled 6.1 billion, up from the previous fiscal year’s total of 5.9 billion. In actual numbers, ridership totaled 22.2 million riders, up from 21.4 million. Including ridership of contracted commuter service totaling 18 million last year, ridership on Amtrak was 40.2 million, up from 21 million just four years ago. Amtrak celebrates its twentieth anniversary on May 1, 1991. And considering that most experts gave little hope to the new company’s survival 20 years ago, the party should be an especially joyous one.
