Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins Free Pick and Preview

Philadelphia Eagles
(5-3, 3-5 ATS)

Washington Redskins
(4-4, 4-3-1 ATS)

The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins will take a second whack at one another on Monday Night Football, as they meet in our nation’s capitol in NFL betting action.

The Eagles are coming off of the biggest game of their season last week, a 26-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Though they haven’t covered a football betting line since October 17th, Philadelphia is in fine shape right now, entering this weekend at 5-3 and firmly in the race for a playoff spot in the NFC. QB Michael Vick might have only played in five games this year, but he is starting to hear some MVP buzz. The former Atlanta Falcon has thrown for 1,017 yards and has rushed for 261 more, totaling nine scores. He has yet to been picked off this season. RB LeSean McCoy has had a nice season as well, rushing for 572 yards and five TDs. McCoy also has the most receptions on the squad with 41. WRs Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson are both on pace for 1,000 yard seasons this year. The two have combined for 1,010 yards with ten of the team’s 13 passing TDs. Defensively, watch out for DE Trent Cole, who has seven sacks this year, while DB Asante Samuel leads the squad with five picks.

The argument could be made that this is the most important game for the Washington franchise in a number of seasons. The Redskins sit at a crossroad right now with QB Donovan McNabb and HC Mike Shanahan, who have had two weeks to stew over the benching of McNabb right before a two minute drill against the Detroit Lions. Shanahan remains dedicated to McNabb as his starting quarterback, and it is expected that the former Philadelphia Eagle is going to be starting in search of his second win against his former team on the season. Still, for a man that hasn’t thrown for two TD passes this year, McNabb clearly has a short leash on his new team. More importantly, the ‘Skins know that this game will probably be the difference between being in the playoff race and out of it for the last part of the season. A loss would drop Washington to 4-5 this year and would probably leave it two games out with just seven to play. A win would keep it tied for a postseason berth with the Eagles and give it the tiebreaker. RB Clinton Portis has been out of the lineup for over a month, but he is questionable to return on Monday night.

This is a tough call, but we tend to believe that revenge is going to be had for Vick and the Eagles. Vick was knocked out of the lineup when these teams met in the City of Brotherly Love, and he’ll be looking to get back at the team that cost him a pair of games. Philly needs this one just as badly as Washington does, and the visitors will get their payback on Monday night.

STATE AGRICULTURAL OFFICIALS SEEK VOLUNTEERS FOR ASIAN LONGHORNED BEETLE TREE SURVEYS IN SPRINGFIELD AND BOSTON.

States News Service November 5, 2009 BOSTON, MA — The following information was released by the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA):

In an effort to prevent the spread of the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB), the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (DAR) will survey trees in Boston and Springfield this month, and is encouraging residents to join state officials to help look for the invasive wood-boring insects.

“It was a private citizen who reported the state’s first Asian Longhorned Beetle in the Worcester area over a year ago, and we are counting on the public again to help us win the battle against this invasive pest,” said DAR Commissioner Scott Soares. “ALB still threaten forests, parks, nurseries and maple producers throughout the Commonwealth.” Volunteers in Springfield will meet Monday November 9 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Mom and Rico’s at 899 Main Street. Boston volunteers will meet on Saturday November 14 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Arlington Street. Volunteers should look for survey leaders wearing ALB buttons and shirts. asianlonghornedbeetle.org asian longhorned beetle

Brief training sessions will precede the surveys, and all needed supplies will be provided, including binoculars. Volunteers should bring comfortable walking shoes and drinking water.

Since the insect was first detected in the Commonwealth in August 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has led an ongoing eradication effort in partnership with the DAR, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the City of Worcester, and the towns of Boylston, Holden, Shrewsbury, and West Boylston. Through this initiative, known as the Massachusetts Asian Longhorned Beetle Cooperative Eradication Program, state and federal officials removed 18,758 trees – including infested trees and host trees in danger of infestation – in the Worcester area. The beetle is thought to have been introduced to the United States in New York in 1996 via wood packing material shipped from Asia. site asian longhorned beetle

How to spot an infestation Detection efforts focus on looking for tell-tale signs of damage. Female beetles chew small oval pits, 1/2 inch in diameter, to lay their eggs beneath tree bark. After the eggs hatch, the larvae bore into and feed off of living trees over the winter.

Signs of an infestation include smooth, round, dime-sized holes left by adult beetles exiting a tree, sawdust-like material on the ground around the trunk or on tree limbs, and oozing sap. If an exit hole can be easily reached, try fitting the eraser end of a pencil into the hole. If it does not go straight in at least one inch deep, it is not the beetle. Also, the beetles leave exit holes spread out across a tree. A series of holes together in a line is often caused by woodpeckers or sapsuckers.

Throughout the summer, adult beetles emerge and feed on leaves and twigs. Adult beetles are .75- to 1.5-inch long, shiny black insects with irregular white spots and antennae that are one to two times their body length. The beetles can be found anywhere including on park benches, car hoods, patio furniture, sides of houses, and sidewalks. The beetles are most active from early summer through mid-fall and do not attack oaks or conifers such as pine or spruce.
