Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Iowa Hawkeyes Preview and Pick

Ohio State Buckeyes
(9-1, 8-2 ATS)

Iowa Hawkeyes
(7-3, 5-5 ATS)

Rose Bowl implications are going to be on the line on Saturday afternoon at Kinnick Stadium in one of the best college football betting affairs of the day, as the Ohio State Buckeyes clash with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Buckeyes clearly have a lot on the line on Saturday, as they know that they can put themselves at least temporarily in the driver’s seat for the Rose Bowl with a huge ‘W’. QB Terrelle Pryor has had the best season of career and he is quite possibly going to be a Heisman Trophy finalist as long as he continues to lead his team to wins. Pryor has completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 2,136 yards and a career high 22 TD tosses. His production on the ground has been slashed just a bit because of how strong RB Daniel Herron has been. Herron rushed for 190 yards last week against the Penn State Nittany Lions, and he is now just 176 yards shy of 1,000 on the ground. Herron has found pay dirt 13 times on the ground this year. WRs Dane Sanzenbacher and DeVier Posey have had solid campaigns. Both have caught 43 passes and have combined for 14 scores. Sanzenbacher leads the team with 716 yards, but Posey is only just barely behind with 664. Defense for OSU is the top priority. Scoring on this team has been impossible for everyone aside from the Wisconsin Badgers this year, as no other team has scored more than three TDs against this unit.

Defense is what was supposed to be running HC Kirk Ferentz’s team this year, but there have been too many lapses to really be considered an elite defense. The numbers are great for Iowa, but bad stretches like last week’s 14 points allowed in the final seven minutes against the Northwestern Wildcats were devastating. The offense just hasn’t been good enough this year to account for mistakes like that in spite of the fact that QB Ricky Stanzi is arguably the best quarterback in the history of the Hawkeyes. Stanzi has thrown 22 TD passes against just four picks in his senior season. Statistically speaking, averaging 405.9 yards and 30.8 points per game should be good enough for Iowa in the Big Ten, especially with some legitimate NFL stars on the other side of the ball. However, in a year in which coming home to give some payback to some teams that were played on the road last year has only ended in disaster, and what was supposed to be one of the best seasons in school history has merely turned out to be average.

Ohio State has just had Iowa’s number throughout the years, and that probably isn’t changing on Saturday. The Hawkeyes are good enough to win this game, but the Buckeyes are even better and are strong enough to overcome all odds. Don’t be shocked if Pryor has a fantastic game and puts himself back into the Heisman race in a week in which both of the top contenders, QB Cam Newton and RB LaMichael James are on bye.
