Tom Brady, New England Patriots (-175): Simply put, right now, Tom Brady is the man. He just tore apart one of the best defenses in football for 45 points in a romp that put his team in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 overall seed in the playoffs, and it would really take a collapse from here to blow it. On top of that, he hasn’t thrown an INT in 228 attempts (which, as you know, the second that someone brings it up, he’ll get intercepted), and he has an absolutely stunning TD/INT ratio of 27/4. Add to that the fact that the receivers that he has had to work with have been putrid at best. WR Randy Moss never worked out, while WR Wes Welker isn’t nearly on pace for the type of year he was last season before he was injured. Deion Branch, Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Brandon Tate, Danny Woodhead… Who are these guys? They’re the dudes that Brady is turning into a bunch of champions. He’s the MVP right now, hands down.
Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles (+300): Had Brady and the Pats not gone absolutely bananas against the New York Jets on national TV last week, perhaps this would be more of a race than it is. Vick, by all accounts, has had an absolutely fantastic year, and there is no doubt that he is one of the most dynamic players in the entire sport. Known more for being a runner than a passer, Vick has gotten the job done with his legs by rushing for 467 yards and six TDs in his basically nine games played. However, consider the fact that he has really put up some great passing numbers as well. He has thrown for at least 280 yards five times in his nine starts, and he now has 2,243 yards and 15 scores on the season. Not only that, but he isn’t turning the ball over either, as he has only been picked off once. He has five multi-TD games and has led his team to essentially a 7-1 record in games in which he started and finished. Prorated over a 16 game season, Vick’s numbers would look something like this… 304 completions, 3,988 yards, 27 TDs, 4 picks, 830 rushing yards, and 11 rushing TDs. Those are MVP numbers… but unfortunately, he has only played in nine games and not 16.

Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons (+750): The man they call “Matty Ice” is certainly an MVP candidate this year, but we know that he isn’t winning the award unless there are some drastic issues with Vick and Brady, and probably several others as well. Ryan is the undisputed leader for a team that is probably going to win the NFC South and most likely will be the No. 1 overall seed in the playoffs in the NFC as well. The former Boston College Eagle has thrown for 2,920 yards and 21 scores against seven picks on the campaign, and to top it all off, he has still only lost one game at home for his career. Ryan might be a hero in Atlanta, but he’s not quite the league’s MVP yet.
Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (+750): One of the top men in the MVP race at the start of the season, Rodgers has probably underperformed just a tad this year, as his numbers just don’t stack up to those of his rivals in this race. However, he makes for great NFL picks on a regular basis due to the fact that he is really a one man show at times. Green Bay has no rushing game whatsoever, and the pressure is consistently on his shoulders. Rodgers has answered the bell, throwing for 3,243 yards and 23 TDs versus nine picks, and he has thrown 11 TD passes in his last four games, but the problem that he has is that his team might not make the playoffs, which would certainly eliminate him from contention. Still, this will probably be his third straight year as a starting signal caller with at least 4,000 passing yards.
Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers (+1000): Speaking of men that are going to pass for 4,000 yards, what about Rivers? He’s not quite at Peyton Manning status in terms of his passing yards yet, but Rivers could easily catch up if he throws for 350 yards this weekend. He has 3,642 yards already and is on a clip for 4,856 in total, and his 24/10 TD/INT ratio is sparkling. Rivers is also the undisputed leader of a team that has badly needed some guidance this year. If San Diego gets into the playoffs, Rivers will remain a candidate. However, a loss this week against the Kansas City Chiefs ends the Bolts’ playoff hopes and Rivers’ MVP chances.
