Green Bay Packers vs. Atlanta Falcons Free Pick and Preview

Green Bay Packers
(7-3, 6-4 ATS)

Atlanta Falcons
(8-2, 6-4 ATS)

The No. 1 seed in the NFC might be on the line in NFL betting action on Sunday afternoon, as the Green Bay Packers invade the Georgia Dome, where they will take on the Atlanta Falcons.

The Packers know that they are still not yet atop the NFC North, but they have a great chance to get the job done by the time the season is over with. QB Aaron Rodgers is within shouting distance of the 3,000 yard mark on the year, and though he probably won’t get there this week, he certainly will in one more. The former Cal Golden Bear has thrown for 2,601 yards and 19 TDs. WR Greg Jennings is very quietly rounding into Pro Bowl form. He has caught 46 passes for 703 yards and has nine scores, and he is coming off of a game in which he absolutely obliterated the secondary for the Minnesota Vikings. Defensively, we continue to talk about LB Clay Matthews because he is just that darn good. Matthews has racked up 11.5 sacks this year to lead the league, and he has a great chance of winning Defensive Player of the Year honors. This Green Bay ‘D’ has been stout all season long, and though it ranks just No. 12 in total defense at 323.4 yards per game, foes are only averaging 14.6 points per game against it. The Packers have only allowed a total of ten points on defense over their last 3.5 games of football.

The Falcons have their work cut out for them, but they know that they can rely on the right arm of QB Matt Ryan at home like no other quarterback can for his team in the NFL. Ryan has only lost once in his career at the Georgia Dome, a place that opponents are quickly losing traction no matter how good they are. “Matty Ice” has thrown for 2,518 yards and 18 TDs this year, and there is a reasonable chance that he could stay alive for the Offensive MVP award. RB Michael Turner has exactly 200 carries in ten games this year, and he has 864 yards and six scores to show for his work. The man to watch though, is WR Roddy White. White is the NFC’s top wide out without a shadow of a doubt, and he is dueling with Denver Broncos WR Brandon Lloyd for the most receiving yards in the league. White has caught 79 passes for 1,017 yards and seven scores, and he’ll look to add to that on Sunday. Defensively, even without DB Dunta Robinson intercepting a pass this year, a Falcons have 15 picks. Robinson has helped a tad, but throwing the ball on this secondary is still the way to go, as this unit ranks just No. 24 in the league in stopping the pass.

Matchup wise, this game should belong to the Pack. They have a great passing game and they aren’t afraid to use it to the fullest against this Atlanta secondary. However, the Dome does some weird things to opponents, and it doesn’t seem to matter what is thrown Ryan’s way. He just continues to find ways to win games. He’ll do it again on Sunday.
