ESPN Monday Night Baseball Betting Free Pick: Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Boston Red Sox
(24-21, -$260)

Tampa Bay Rays
(32-12, +$1,407)

After a weekend of interleague play, MLB betting action for the Tampa Bay Rays returns to divisional play, as the Boston Red Sox come to town for the first game of a three game series at Tropicana Field. The Rays hold an 8.5 game advantage over their hated rivals in the AL East chase coming into this series and can really put the Sox in a huge hole that they may not be able to work out of with a sweep from Monday to Wednesday.

Riding the wave of momentum from two straight great starts, RHP Clay Buchholz will take the mound for the Red Sox on Monday night. He has only allowed three runs in 14.1 innings in his L/2 appearances, picking up victories against both the Tigers and Twins. The good times have been rolling for Buchholz against Tampa Bay as well, as he is 2-2 with a stellar 2.01 ERA in five career starts. Walks are a big issue right now for the right-hander, as he has allowed 23 free passes in 49.2 innings, an average of just under three per start. A K/9 of 6.34 isn’t terrible, but isn’t anything to write home about either.

RHP Wade Davis has put together a ton of quality starts for manager Joe Maddon this year. For a fifth starter, a 4-3 record and a 3.35 ERA are fantastic numbers. Much like Buchholz, Davis has had an issue with walking a few too many batters and not getting enough strikeouts to warrant the quantity of free base runners. Davis has a 6.70 K/9, but a K/BB ratio of just 1.42. Opposing batters are only hitting .239 against the right-hander this season and .241 for his career. This will only be Davis’ 15th career start, and he has never faced the Red Sox. At Tropicana Field this year, the righty is 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA.

Even though the Rays were probably being overvalued on the road, they’re still being undervalued at home. They come into this week dead even in terms of money earned for MLB betting fans in spite of a 13-7 record. Only having to lay -125 on Tampa Bay is a steal, especially considering the pitching matchup is a relatively even one. Look for the hosts to prove once again that they have the better team, as they send Red Sox nation home with another defeat.
