The Mountaineers are the closest team to cracking the Top 25 in the Big East, and ‘W’ will certainly get the job done. This is a BCS elimination game for WVU, as it needs to win these final two games and get some help to lock down the Big East championship. HC Bill Stewart has one of the best defenses in the entire country. The Mountaineers rank No. 4 in the country in total ‘D’ at 245.1 yards per game and No. 4 in scoring at 12.9 points per game. No one has scored more than 21 points against this ‘D’ all year long, and no one has scored more than 20 in a regulation game. The issue is the offense, which is a tremendous change from the Rich Rodriguez era. QB Geno Smith has only thrown for 2,003 yards, but he has 19 TDs against six picks for the year. Smith is clearly growing as the weeks go on, but there are still some real issues to work on. He would be helped quite a bit if RB Noel Devine lived up to his hype this year. Devine feels like he has gone downhill every year since coming to Morgantown, and this has really been the most disappointing season of them all. He has rushed for 828 yards and just six TDs.
Pittsburgh is going to need to win this game to be in a position to make it to the BCS. The Panthers have allowed at least 30 points twice this year, but aside from those two games, only two teams have scored in the 20s against them. Defensively, this is a tremendous team as well. The ‘D’ is allowing just 302.6 yards per game, good enough for No. 12 in the nation. Pitt ranks in the Top 20 in the land in every major defensive category, including in scoring where it is allowing 19.2 points per game. QB Tino Sunseri has had a respectable season, throwing for 2,034 yards and 14 TDs against six picks, but he has gotten a ton of help from his ground game as well. RB Ray Graham has been a pleasant surprise, picking up the slack from second year bust RB Dion Lewis. These two have combined for 1,465 yards this year, which basically makes up for the yardage that Lewis had by himself last year.
This is going to be a brutal, brutal game this year as it usually is. The Panthers probably don’t have the better ‘D’ in this game, and it is going to show. The Mountaineers might only end up with a few scores in this game, but that will be enough to come on the road and take care of U-Pitt.
