College Football Betting Preview: LSU Tigers vs. North Carolina Tar Heels

LSU Tigers
(9-4, 5-8 ATS in 2009)

North Carolina Tar Heels
(5-7, 5-7 ATS in 2009)

Ranked teams from the ACC and SEC collide with neither team holding a home field advantage on Saturday night, as the North Carolina Tar Heels and LSU Tigers crack skulls in NCAA football betting action.

LSU has a major problem this year once again at the quarterback position. QB Jordon Jefferson is going to get the nod for the second straight year, but no one in Baton Rouge can be thrilled around it. Jefferson only completed 61.3 percent of his passes last year for 2,166 yards with 17 TDs and seven INTs. Jefferson had a miserable time standing into the teeth of some of the best defenses in the SEC last year, and now he is going to have to go against one of the best in the entire country. Needless to say, things could get awfully hairy. HC Les Miles could find himself on the hot seat, especially if he doesn’t win this game in spite of the fact that he has brought the Bayou Bengals into National Championship contention in years past. He’ll be relying heavily on a defense that has plenty of returning blood. That unit allowed just 327.3 yards and 16.2 points per game in what realistically still amounted to be a down year by the standards of the purple and gold.

The Tar Heels have had one heck of an offseason. They have already seen the NCAA begin to probe into a scandal that could ultimately see the mass majority of one of the best defenses in the country crippled with suspensions that could ruin their season. However, for this one, UNC appears to be as intact as it will be this year, and HC Butch Davis knows that he must rely on this unit to be lights out, especially with a stout front seven for LSU waiting on the other side of the field. The Tar Heels have a relatively experienced offense this year, led by QB TJ Yates. Yates has had an up and down career, and last season was no exception. He completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 2,136 yards and 14 scores against 15 picks. Even though this is his fourth year as the starting quarterback for this team, Davis knows that he is going to have to have a short leash for Yates, or the baby blue clad faithful will start to grumble about the job that he is doing.

On paper, these two teams look almost identical. Neither one has confidence in their veteran starting quarterback, and both have defenses that have the potential to be the best in the country. There’s one difference, though. UNC has a program that is on the rise. LSU’s is probably on the way down. This is a clash that means a whole heck of a lot to both of these teams, but Carolina should prove to be triumphant in what could be one of the meanest, ugliest games of the entire NCAA football wagering season.

Selection: North Carolina Tar Heels +3.5
