Sorting through the Big East standings right now is about as easy as trying to find a needle in a haystack. One thing is for certain, and that’s that the South Florida Bulls have to win on Saturday afternoon at home when the Pitt Panthers come to town.

U-Pitt is still in the driver’s seat in the Big East, knowing that it is three wins away from the BCS once again. However, this has been a very unpredictable team this year that still has to face three very strong foes, and losing all three and not making a bowl game seems like a legitimate possibility, though not likely. The Panthers badly need to put their defense back in drive, as they allowed 30 points last Thursday night to the Connecticut Huskies in a bad loss in Storrs. However, this unit is still allowing just 304.6 yards per game and 20.2 points per game in spite of the fact that DE Greg Romeus, one of the best defensive linemen in the nation, is out of the lineup. The combination of RB Ray Graham and RB Dion Lewis have accounted for well over half the touches for the Pittsburgh offense this year. The two have combined for 1,316 yards and 15 TDs on the season. Getting the ball up the field to WR Jonathan Baldwin is important as well. Baldwin might only have 39 catches this year, but he does have 641 yards and five scores.
USF has already wrapped up a spot in its bowl game, though one more win will certainly remove any doubt. HC Skip Holtz was brought here to take the Bulls to the BCS though, and winning these final two home games against the Panthers and Connecticut Huskies will get the job done if both the Syracuse Orange and West Virginia Mountaineers both trip at some point. None of the statistics on this team are all that impressive to say the least. QB BJ Daniels has more INTs (11) than TDs (9). RB Moise Plancher only has 516 yards and four scores, while his backup RB Demetris Murray only has 391 yards and two TDs. Just like Pittsburgh, the defense is key for South Florida. This is a unit that has held six teams to 21 points or fewer this year, and if that keeps up for the rest of the season, the Bulls are going to be in fantastic shape. Home games in the Big East have been brutal for USF, as it is just 1-1 SU and 0-2 ATS thus far at Raymond James Stadium.
This is a tricky little game to try to handicap, as are most of the tussles in the Big East. However, what we are starting to realize is that we should expect the unexpected. South Florida is the short underdog in this game, but these two teams are really just dead even. It’s hard not to take the points.
