Brett Favre Retirement Shakes NFL Odds for Minnesota Vikings
Brett Favre has decided to hang up his football cleats once and for all. On Tuesday, news broke from Minnesota Vikings camp that No. 4 is no more in purple and gold. For the third time, Favre is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL.
The Vikings are now left with a big problem at the quarterback position. Both Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels have the ability to lead a team, but neither one has had any sort of smashing success as a starter. The two only have combined to start 31 games in their careers, a far cry from the 256 of the departed Favre.
Jackson has had experience calling the shots in Minnesota before, leading the team to the playoffs in 2009. He was the losing quarterback in a 26-14 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles two years ago in the Wild Card round of the postseason.
The former Alabama State signal caller has done a nice job of late, throwing ten TD passes against two picks over the last two seasons, but for his career, he only has thrown for 3,643 yards and 21 TDs against 18 INTs. Jackson has rushed for 466 yards and four TDs in his career as well.
Rosenfels has never been called upon to be a starting quarterback out of camp, and it is going to be difficult for HC Brad Childress to turn the ball over to him this year. At 32 years old, Rosenfels really doesn’t have a “future” as a starter in this league, so if he were to start, it would be simply as a short term fix for a long term problem.
Rosenfels has thrown for 4,156 yards and 30 TDs in 32 career games (12 starts), but he has tossed 30 TDs and 29 INTs. He has been fumble prone as well, coughing up the pigskin 11 times. Rosenfels also hasn’t taken a snap in a regular season game since the end of the 2008 campaign when he was with the Houston Texans.
Prior to the departure of Favre, Diamond Sportsbook featured the Vikings as +145 selections in the NFC North, making them the second favorite on the board behind the Green Bay Packers. The Chicago Bears were a distant third choice, but by the time the NFL odds open back up again, there is a decent chance that the men from the Windy City could hop over Minnesota.
The Vikings were the fourth choice on the board in the NFC at +700 and were +1200 choices to win Super Bowl XLV.
