The Knicks have cooled down just a bit, but the perception on this team would be a tad different if a couple of these close losses bounced the other direction and the team had 20 wins this year instead of 18. New York is still getting fantastic contributions out of Amare Stoudemire, who has scored at least 20 points in every game that he has played for a month and a half. The problems aren’t coming offensively for the Knickerbockers, though. They’re averaging 107.6 points per game and are connecting on a healthy 46.7 percent of their shots from the floor. The real issue is coming defensively. Just look at the 106 points that the Miami Heat put up two nights ago in South Beach. You’re not beating Miami, especially on the road, if you allow 106 points, something that the Knicks will find out is true if it happens in Orlando as well. In the Eastern Conference, you need to play some ‘D’ to be successful, especially against the likes of Miami, Boston, and Orlando. Allowing 106.5 points per game isn’t going to cut it, especially when teams are shooting 47.0 percent from the field against you.
The new look Magic continue to look good, and they really are on their way to some fantastic things here on this four game home stand. Head Coach Stan Van Gundy will tell you that there is no excuse whatsoever to not be on an eight game roll going into the game on January 8th against the Dallas Mavericks, a game that we are waiting for intently. Though the offensive pieces of the puzzle have really come together for Orlando in recent games (110 vs. Cleveland, 104 vs. New Jersey), it is again the defense that we are keying in on. The first few games were relatively disastrous in which this new group was together, and there had to be a major fear bringing in pieces like Jason Richardson off of a Phoenix Suns team that really thinks defense is optional at times. The plan is working so far though, as Van Gundy’s squad is holding foes to just 87.0 points per game over the course of these last three ‘W’s, lowering its average points per game against total down to 92.9.
The Knicks have been lethal this year for NBA betting fans when they are catching points, especially when you’re talking about over a touchdown’s worth of points in this one. However, the Magic are just streaking right now, and this is one of the most difficult road trips in the league that New York is wrapping up right now. Don’t be shocked to see Orlando run away with this one with a big second half surge.
NBA Free Pick: Orlando Magic -7.5
