Last year the Portland Trail blazers came of age. They found superstars on the court, found a coach they could believe in and made the playoffs for the first time since 2003. They lost in the first round and some would see that as a disappointment but after what this franchise has been through it has to be seen as a great season. Now the trick will be to do it again.
Nate McMillan has taken over this team and finally got the players he wanted and the system he wanted in place. He is a hero in Portland and is looked at as miracle worker for the things that he has done in Portland. This is a feeling that will be short lived if he does not continue to build on his success in the upcoming years.
The Blazers lost the services of forward Channing Frye but this is not a problem that will be tough to solve. The Blazers went out and drafted three forwards to make up for the loss. They drafted Victor Claver in the first round and then countered with Dante Cunningham and Jeff Pendergraph in the second round. Not the most impressive draft in the NBA but they did address the weak spots and that is a good way to approach the draft. When it comes to free agents the Blazers scored an A+ by getting Andre Miller to run point. He is perfect for this system and will be a difference maker when he takes the court.
Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge are a great one-two punch and they will get even better once they get Andre Miller in the system. He is a great point player and likes to see others succeed. The real key will be Greg Oden. At times he looked lost on the court and over matched at the center position. He is a hard worker and there is no doubt that he will be better this year than he was last year. The center position was a weak spot that got the Blazers kicked out of the playoffs. This year they advance to the second round but there are a lot of variables that could stop them from going any farther.
